ROME, Ga. – The Troy men's tennis team put up a tough fight but came up just short on Saturday morning, as it fell to Old Dominion 4-2 in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Tournament at the Rome Tennis Complex.
While not achieving its ultimate goal, it was another impressive season for Troy (20-8), who finished with its most wins in a season since 2021 when it also had 20. The Trojans gave top-seeded Old Dominion (16-8) – also ranked No. 56 nationally – all it could handle.
The Monarchs opened doubles play with a 6-2 win in the No. 1 spot, but the Trojans quickly followed with a 7-5 win by Luciano Alcocer and Henrique de Brito in the No. 3 spot to even things up. ODU came out ahead in the deciding match with a 6-4 win to take the early 1-0 lead.
Old Dominion added to its lead quickly in singles, winning in straight sets in the No. 5 and No. 1 spots to make it 3-0 and put Troy's back against the wall. Troy answered the challenge, as Noah Martens recorded a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 to make it a 3-1 deficit. The win marked his 14th of the season and his sixth in a row.
Alcocer added to the Troy tally as well, picking up a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 victory in the No. 6 spot to bring the Trojans within one. With the win, Alcocer moved to 17-5 during dual play. His 17 wins were good for second on the team this spring.
The comeback effort wasn't enough though, as Old Dominion clinched its ticket to the championship match with a 6-7, 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2. The other singles match went unfinished.
