TROY, Ala. – The Troy men's tennis team starts its postseason play on Friday morning, as it takes on No. 5 seeded Louisiana in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Tournament in Rome, Ga. First serve is set for 9 a.m.
Troy (19-7, 4-3 SBC) had a strong second half of conference play and looks to keep that momentum going as it enters the conference tournament as the No. 4 seed. After starting 0-3 against SBC foes, the Trojans ended the season on a five-match winning streak.
For the Trojans to find success in the conference tournament, they will need to do what's worked all season: start fast in doubles and carry that momentum into singles play. When Troy takes the 1-0 lead, they are 15-1 this season. Leading the doubles charge is the dynamic duo of Noah Martens and Nicolas Simkin. The pairing was named to the Doubles Second Team All-Conference after going 7-5 this spring in the No. 1 spot. As a squad, the Trojans went 42-21 in doubles play un duals.
In singles, the Trojans will rely heavily on Hiiro Sakamoto and Yeray Andres Pastor, both of which earned All-Conference honors. Sakamoto, who was named freshman of the year, posted a team-best 21-3 record during dual play. He finished the regular season winning eight of his last 10 matches. He was 13-2 at the No. 4 spot and a 7-1 record at No. 5. In Sun Belt play, we went 5-2 in singles.
Pastor earned Singles Second-Team All-Conference after recording an impressive record of 14-3 this dual season while playing in the top two spots. Against Sun Belt foes, Pastor was 2-2. He went 5-2 while playing in the No. 1 spot and 9-1 at No. 2.
Simkin also plays in the top of the lineup aside Pastor and was named the Sun Belt Player of the Week for his impressive win at No. 2 over Georgia State.
The Trojans defeated Louisiana (10-11, 4-4 SBC) at home less than two weeks ago. A win for Troy would match them up against the winner of Old Dominion vs. James Madison on Saturday morning.
