TROY, Ala. – The Troy softball team dropped a 6-1 contest to Georgia Southern on Saturday, as the Eagles (26-16, 10-4 SBC) evened the series. The Trojans (27-18, 6-8 SBC) scored in the first inning but surrendered six unanswered runs.
From the dish, Makaley Boswell and Cassidy Boltz had strong afternoons. Boswell went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run, while Boltz had a 2-for-3 day, driving in Troy's only run.
Boswell and Boltz had their 11th and 12th multi-hit games of the season, respectively. Both are in the top three on the team for that category.
Mya Holt (10-4) started her outing with a quick inning, working around an Eagles double. The Trojans quickly threatened in the bottom of the inning.
Makaley Boswell led off the inning with a triple to right field – her second of the season – before Cassidy Boltz scored her with a single up the middle to give Troy a 1-0 lead.
Georgia Southern tied it back up in the second inning, hitting a sacrifice fly after creating traffic on the basepaths. Holt snagged a line drive and induced a groundout to get out of the inning.
With two outs in the second inning, McKinnon Howard reached on an error and Boswell punched a single down the third base line. However, Georgia Southern struck out Taylor McKinney after a 10-pitch at-bat to end the inning.
After leading off the third inning with two hits, the Eagles took the lead with a single through the right side. Savannah Money entered the game and got Troy out of the inning with two quick outs.
The Eagles widened the lead in the fourth, scoring off a wild pitch and an error to make it 4-1. Georgia Southern kept the inning going with a single and an error, scoring another run. An RBI triple widened the lead to five runs.
Following a quiet Troy inning, Kate Peters turned in a scoreless frame from the circle. McKinney ended the inning by throwing a laser to third base, forcing out an Eagles runner trying to advance.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Trojans strung together two straight singles with two outs – Caiden Oliva and Boltz hit them to force the Eagles starter out of the game. With the bases loaded, Kayden Dunn flew out to center field to end the inning.
Peters spun another scoreless inning in the sixth, sending Troy back to the plate. The Trojans couldn't capitalize on a Georgia Southern error.
In the seventh inning, Peters went back out and held Georgia Southern in check yet again. She finished the game with 3.1 innings pitched, allowing only two hits.
While McKinney drew a walk to lead off the seventh, the Trojans couldn't push across a run in the frame.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"We weren't pleased with the performance today for sure. We didn't play well, we didn't execute well and we didn't defend well. It's disappointing for sure, but Georgia Southern played really well, executed when they needed to and played better than us. There's a reason why they're at the top of the conference. With that said, we have to flush it and think constructively on how we can change today and still win the series tomorrow."
