TROY, Ala. – Troy softball completed a series sweep of UMass on Sunday, winning the first game behind a third straight shutout and roaring back in the second with a 12-run inning to run-rule the Minutewomen (5-14).
The Trojans (16-9) shut out UMass 7-0 in the first game. Troy had three straight shutouts for the first time since Apr. 2-3, 2021, against Georgia Southern. In game two, four homers powered Troy to a 15-7 win.
Kayden Dunn went 2-for-6 on the day, crushing two home runs to bring her season total to six. After crushing a home run against Auburn, the first baseman has hit four home runs in the last five games.
Game 1: Troy 7, UMass 0
Troy recorded its third straight shutout with a 7-0 win over UMass to start the day. This time, it was Savannah Money who starred from the circle while the bats pushed across plenty of runs.
Money (2-1) spun 5.1 scoreless innings, striking out four batters and giving up six hits. The sophomore earned her first scoreless start of the year, cruising through the Minutewomen lineup.
On the offensive side of things, Caiden Oliva, Reaghan Oney and Natalie Turner led the charge. Turner finished the game 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI, running her streak to six straight at-bats with a hit.
The freshman duo of Oliva and Oney each had two hits, with Oney hitting a double and an RBI single.
Money worked around a first-inning single, inducing a double play to get the Trojans out of the inning unscathed. The offense got things going quickly, with Taylor McKinney reaching on a hit-by-pitch and Oliva poking a single through the right side.
With two outs, Makaley Boswell hit a ball on the screws, but it was right to the pitcher to end the inning.
Two strikeouts in the second inning allowed Money to work around another hit in the second inning.
To start the bottom of the second, Oney smoked a double to right field. Mia Tidmore grounded a ball to third base, and a throwing error allowed Oney to come around to score.
Following a bunt single by Natalie Turner – her fourth straight hit – the Trojans pulled off another double steal, and Tidmore stole home to give Troy a 2-0 lead.
Oliva led off the third inning with a single, advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. A throwing error from the UMass catcher allowed her to score. Oney followed it up with a laser up the middle, scoring Boswell after she reached on a walk.
Money protected the 4-0 lead by shutting down the Minutewomen in the fourth and fifth innings. The Trojans piled on in the fifth to widen the lead.
To lead off the fifth inning, Dunn rocketed a home run to left center field. After getting a few runners on from a walk and a Tidmore bunt single, Turner annihilated her second double of the game to make it a 7-0 game.
Money and Esmee Ames combined to finish out the shutout in the last two innings.
Game 2: Troy 15, UMass 7
The Trojans capped off the four-game sweep of UMass with a 15-7 run-rule victory. After falling behind 7-3 in the fifth inning, Troy put up a 12-run inning to walk off the Minutewomen.
Sarah Beth Brake had a monster 2-for-2 game, pushing across four RBIs. The catcher drilled a two-run homer early and tied the game in the fifth with a two-RBI single.
Hitting from the leadoff spot, Makaley Boswell went 1-for-2 with 3 RBIs. Her two-run home run ignited Troy's fifth inning rally and she also drew a bases-loaded walk later in the frame.
Taylor McKinney and Kayden Dunn also hit home runs – McKinney launched a grand slam to center field and Dunn followed it up with the walk-off homer just two batters later.
Mya Holt worked quickly to start the game, spinning two scoreless innings in just 21 pitches. Dunn took a walk to lead off the second inning, becoming the first Trojan baserunner.
Brake sent a line-drive shot to dead center to give Troy a 2-0 lead. Her third home run of the season handed the Trojans the early lead.
Although UMass finally got on the board in the third inning, Natalie Turner helped Holt out of it with a spectacular diving tag to get a runner at third base.
The Minutewomen tied the game up 3-3 with a two-run homer in the fourth inning after Esmee Ames entered the circle, but she got out of the inning with a few groundouts.
While Troy threatened to score in the bottom of the fourth, UMass tracked down a hard-hit ball off the bat of Turner to end the inning.
UMass took a commanding 7-3 lead in the fifth inning off Kate Peters and Alyssa Faircloth, with the four-run inning putting Troy in a hole late. However, the Trojans wasted no time cutting into the deficit.
With one runner on, Boswell torched a ball to left-center field to make it a 7-5 game. Her home run was just the second of her career, and the first she hit at home.
After Troy loaded the bases in the inning, Brake delivered again with a single to tie the game at 7-7. Rebekah Johnson and Annie Orman each added RBI singles to take the lead back – Boswell came back around to draw a bases-loaded walk.
Taylor McKinney promptly unloaded the bases with a mammoth grand slam to center field, and Dunn capped off the inning with a walk-off blast to end the game.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"This has been a great weekend with four wins. It's something that we really set out to do. That last game definitely had some adversity where we were down by four runs, but we put the 12 spot up in the fifth inning and that was pretty neat and exciting. I'm excited for the girls and we played really well."
