TROY, Ala. – Troy softball ran its win streak to six games after sweeping Alabama A&M in a midweek doubleheader on Wednesday. The Trojans (18-9) run-ruled the Bulldogs (12-11) in their final games before Sun Belt Conference play begins this weekend.
Over the doubleheader, Troy used consistent bats and lights-out pitching to win 8-0 and 9-0 – the Trojans scored eight combined first inning runs to jump out to early leads. In the last eight games, the Trojans have had six shutouts.
Taylor McKinney went 3-for-5 across both games, stealing two bases and driving in two runs. The Trojans two-hole hitter scored four runs against the Bulldogs.
Game One: Troy 8, Alabama A&M 0
Troy opened the day with an 8-0 run-rule win over Alabama A&M. A five-run first inning fueled the Trojans, who improved to 8-3 when scoring in the first inning.
Following a strong weekend against UMass, Kayden Dunn continued her torrid stretch with a 3-for-3 game, driving in three runs. Cassidy Boltz also showed out, going 1-for-2 with a solo shot and a bases-loaded hit by pitch.
After surrendering a leadoff single to start the game, Mya Holt (7-2) worked quickly to get out of the first inning. Makaley Boswell led off the bottom of the frame with a walk and a stolen base – Taylor McKinney and Caiden Oliva followed it up with walks to load the bases.
Stepping up with the bases loaded, Dunn looped a single to center field, scoring two runs for Troy after the Bulldogs centerfielder misplayed the ball. Troy added another run on a bases-loaded hit by pitch to make it a 3-0 game, forcing Alabama A&M's starter out of the game.
With the bases still loaded, Dailynn Motes smoked a ball to the shortstop, who tried to get a double play. However, the Bulldogs first baseman dropped the ball at first and two runs came around to score.
Holt protected the 5-0 lead in the second inning, stranding two runners on base. The Trojans piled on in the second inning, using singles from Boswell and McKinney to get baserunners – Troy made it 7-0 on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single off the bat of Dunn.
After missing the past seven games with an injury, Boltz burst onto the scene like she never left with a mammoth home run to left-center field. Her fourth home run of the season gave the Trojans an 8-0 lead and put the run-rule possibility into play.
Esmee Ames entered the game, working around a few singles to get out of the inning. True freshman Laney Williams also saw her first action at catcher, throwing out a would-be base stealer.
In the fifth inning, Ally Fleck stepped into the circle. She sat down the Bulldogs in order, finishing Troy's fifth shutout in the last seven games.
Game Two: Troy 9, Alabama A&M 0
To end the day, the Trojans earned a 9-0 run-rule win over the Bulldogs. Reaghan Oney's five RBIs powered the Trojans as her three-run first inning homer got Troy off to a quick start. She's the first Trojan to bring across five runs in a game since Audra Thompson did it on May 9, 2024, against Coastal Carolina.
Oney finished the night 2-for-3, also pushing two across with a triple. Taylor McKinney went 2-for-3 with two RBIs – her two-RBI, fourth inning single moved the game into run-rule territory.
Alyssa Faircloth (8-3) added to her Sun Belt Conference leading strikeout total with seven strikeouts across four scoreless innings. While she walked five, Faircloth only allowed one hit.
Although she walked a batter in the first inning, Faircloth struck out two Bulldogs to get out of the frame.
The Trojans struck in the first inning yet again – after Taylor McKinney reached on an error and Caiden Oliva poked a single through the right side, Oney gave Troy the lead with her three-run homer to left-center field. The long ball was the second of her career.
While Alabama A&M had a lot of traffic on the basepaths, a double play and a strikeout got Faircloth out of the second inning. She punched out two more Bulldogs in the third.
After a McKinney leadoff double and a Kayden Dunn walk in the third inning, Oney delivered yet again with a triple to score both runners and give Troy a 5-0 lead. Oney came around to score on a wild pitch to increase the lead to 6-0.
Faircloth brought her strikeout total to seven in the fourth inning. To start Troy's half of the inning, Mia Tidmore, McKinnon Howard and Makaley Boswell all reached to load the bases.
McKinney drove in two runners with a hard-hit single up the middle, bringing the lead to 8-0. Boswell came home to score on a wild pitch.
Savannah Money entered the game in the fifth to close out the run-rule win.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"It was a good night tonight, 8-0 and 9-0 wins. We did a lot of things right, but there are some areas that we need to tighten up a bit. All in all, to take the two wins pretty convincingly is a good night."
