Troy, who fell in the quarterfinals of last season's tournament, looks to will its way to Sunday night's semifinal game against James Madison. A key to the Trojans having success this weekend will be the play of Tayton Conerway, who was named the Sun Belt Player of the Year on Monday afternoon.
Conerway, a senior guard from Texas, leads Troy in scoring at 13.7 points per game this season. In Troy's 18 conference games Conerway averaged 16.2 points per contest which was 11th in the Sun Belt. He scored in double-digits in 23 of 30 games and scored at least 10 points in all but one conference game. On the season, Conerway ranked seventh in the Sun Belt with a 46.6 percent field goal percentage and ranked first in steals (91) and third in total assists (149).
Another key to Troy's success this season, and something that will play a crucial role in postseason play, is its experience and consistency. Troy returned 12 players from last year's team and has had the same starting lineup in 24 games (Conerway, Marcus Rigsby Jr., Myles Rigsby, Thomas Dowd and Jackson Fields). The Trojans are 18-6 in those games.
Troy's defense has also been at the top of the conference this year and will be an important factor in the tournament. The Trojans are holding its opponent's 41 percent shooting this season, which ranks fourth in the Sun Belt. It's also giving up the third-fewest points in the SBC at 65.3. Troy leads the conference in steals per game (9.7) and is second in blocks per game (4.6).
Under head coach Scott Cross, Troy has won at least one conference tournament game in all but two seasons.
