CHOUDRANT, La. – Nick Fowlkes tied the ninth-lowest round in program history, shooting a 6-under 66 in Monday's second round of the Argent Financial Classic at the Squire Creek Country Club. Fowlkes moved into first place individually at 7-under through 36 holes, while Troy climbed four spots into a tie for first with Houston.
Troy shot 8-under as a team, which would have ranked as its second-best round of all last season, to move from fifth following Sunday's opening round into a tie for first at 7-under. South Alabama is seven shots back in third, followed by Rice and Louisiana.
Fowlkes put on a clinic Monday, especially on the back nine, where he birdied five of the nine holes, including the 17th and 18th, to close out the day. He finished with eight birdies on the day and just two bogeys.
He carries a one-shot lead over ULM's Louis Anceaux, who shot 3-under on the day to move to 6-under for the tournament. Fowlkes has been in the red both his rounds this week, coming off a season in which he turned in four rounds under par.
"Wow, what a great day for the Troy Trojans," head coach Clay Bounds said. "We still have a lot of work to do tomorrow, but today was great for the program. The guys are really stepping up this week, and Nick's round of 66 today was amazing. I'm looking forward to a great day tomorrow."
Lee Poppell also shot up the leaderboard on Monday, as the Trojan sophomore shot 1-under to climb nine spots into a tie for 10th place, while Jason Quinlan moved up 18 spots into a tie for 12th after his round of 71 as well.
Poppell played a clean round as he dropped in birdies on the second and the 15th around 16 pars, while Quinlan had five birdies on the day, including three on the back nine, where he shot a 1-under 35, thanks to birdies on the 16th and 17th.
Pablo Gracia is hovering around par, sitting at 1-over after shooting 72 on Monday to move into a tie for 20thplace – a 10-spot improvement – and Jake Springer sits in a tie for 69th place at 7-over par. Gracia did most his damage on the front nine as he made the turn at 1-under thanks to three birdies, including two right out of the gate.
Troy, Houston and South Alabama will be in the tail group going off No. 1 for Tuesday's final round, with the first threesome teeing off at 10 a.m. and the final group at 10:40 a.m.
