Troy Men’s Golf Looks to Defend Title at Argent Financial Classic

TROY, Ala. – Coming off the most successful season in its Division I history, the Troy men's golf team opens the fall this weekend at the Argent Financial Classic, hosted by Louisiana Tech at Squire Creek Country Club. The Trojans opened the 2024 season winning the event by three shots.
"We're excited to hit the course for our first tournament," head coach Clay Bounds said. "We've had some strong qualifying scores, with young guys stepping up to earn spots in the lineup. This weekend is our chance to see how we stack up against a competitive field. We've got a young team, and now it's about developing in tournament play."
Troy finished 29th nationally last season after advancing to the NCAA Championship for the first time at the Division I level. The Trojans were the top-ranked team in the Sun Belt and placed fourth at the NCAA Urbana Regional to secure their berth in the championship field.
Three mainstays of that historic run — Brantley Scott, Jake Springer and Nick Fowlkes — have graduated.
"It's going to be hard to replace those guys," Bounds said. "They'll go down as some of the best to ever play here. But last year is over, and we can't hang our hats on that."
Junior Pablo Gracia dominated Troy's qualifiers, shooting under par in five of seven rounds and even in the other two. He turned in seven under-par rounds last season, while fellow junior Lee Poppell recorded 11 red numbers and a pair of top-10 finishes.
"Lee and Pablo have stepped into leadership roles," Bounds said. "Pablo with his play on the course, and Lee as a vocal presence who makes sure the younger guys know our program's expectations. The last two years they were following others, and now they're the ones setting the tone."
Sophomore Grant Yerger, who saw action in nine rounds last season, returns to the lineup, while freshmen Landon Noble and Thomas Crane make their collegiate debuts.
