CONWAY, S.C. – Complete and total domination summarized game three for Troy baseball as it completed the sweep over No. 12 Coastal Carolina Sunday afternoon with a 15-3 run-rule victory at Springs Brooks Stadium to claim sole possession of the No. 2 spot in the Sun Belt.
All nine Trojans (31-14, 14-7 SBC) in the starting lineup reached base, with Brooks Bryan and Ben Arnett leading the day by going 3-for-3 – Bryan also earned two walks. Meanwhile, Kyle Mock and Will Butcher combined for six RBIs with three apiece, while Grayson Stewart (2-2) earned his second win through six innings with four strikeouts and just two earned runs.
Troy took an inning to get started as Brooks Bryan battled to a full-count walk and advanced to third on a passed ball and ground out. All Mock needed to do was put the ball in play as he grounded out to second, scoring Bryan, 1-0, for Troy's first run. Kole Myers pushed the lead to two, 2-0, in the top of the third when he blasted a solo shot to right field on a full count – marked his eighth of 2024.
Coastal (27-17, 11-10 SBC) tacked one on, 2-1, after Ty Dooley earned a 4-1 walk and Sebastian Alexander singled through the right side down 0-2 in the count – put Dooley on third. A wild pitch for Troy allowed Dooley to capitalize and score.
The floodgates began to pour open in the fourth for the Trojans when Arnett got HBP and advanced on a wild pitch. With Arnett at second, Peyton Watts battled to a 2-2 count and shot one straight back at the pitcher and up the middle to bring No. 12 home, 3-1. Watts stole second, and Ethan Kavanagh got HBP to put two runners on. A wild pitch proceeded the HBP, but it didn't matter as Butcher connected with a full count to end a nine-game drought for homers on his fifth career three-run home run, 6-1.
A scoreless fifth was met by the first nine-run inning for the Trojans in over a decade (March 23, 2024 – ULM). The inning started with a full-count walk for Kavanagh, followed by an HBP on Butcher and a 1-2 single to first base for Bryan to load the bases. Tremayne Cobb Jr. stepped up to bat and put the ball in play to third base, forcing the error and scoring Kavanagh, 8-1. After a wild pitch scored Butcher, 9-1, with Mock batting, No. 7 secured his lone hit via a two-RBI double to right center, 10-1, as Cobb Jr. and Bryan came home.
The bases reloaded two batters later when Aidan Gilroy got HBP and Arnett singled to left field. On a 1-2 count, Myers put the ball in play to first base, forcing the throwing error and bringing Mock and Gilroy around, 12-1. The second walk of the inning on Kavanagh loaded the bases for the third time, and a full-count walk on Bryan scored one, 13-1. Cobb Jr. forced a Coastal error for the second time in the inning, sending the ball to the pitcher, who couldn't complete the throw to bring the eighth (Myers) and ninth (Kavanagh) run of the sixth in for Troy.
The Chanticleers waved the white flag, sending nothing but pinch hitters to the plate, and it paid off after Stewart put two quick outs on the board in the sixth. Cameron Sebuck grabbed the 2-2 double and allowed a 0-2 single to left field by Walk Mitchell to score one, 15-2. Coastal managed one more run, 15-3, in the seventh on a walk with the bases loaded, but it wasn't nearly enough as Troy run-ruled the No. 12-ranked team in the country for its first sweep over a top-25 opponent in the program's recorded history.
Head Coach Skylar Meade
"Just a tremendous day. Tremendous weekend in totality. The guys came out with constant attacks, scoring in four of the seven innings played today. Add in Stewart's competitiveness and his execution with pitches was really good. The defense was solid, and they made great reads throughout. We finished it off right. All parties offensively had a great day. If you didn't get the hit, you took the walk or ran the bases well. It'll be a fun bus ride back. The guys most certainly deserved it. We still got more work to do, so we'll reset Monday and get ready for Alabama State on Tuesday."
