Kole Myers led the Trojans (32-14) on a 2-for-3 day with four runs, four stolen bases and three walks. No. 12 Ben Arnett continued his hot streak, going 2-for-4 and tying Kavanagh for a team-high three RBIs as he extended his career-long hitting streak to seven.
Alabama State (22-21) struck first, 1-0, in the top of the first after Jamal George singled through the left side and stole second. With two outs on the board, Juan Cruz sent an RBI double down the left-field line to bring George home.
The Trojans responded quickly in the bottom half, 1-1, after Myers earned his 53rd walk (leads the nation) and stole his 27th base (leads the Sun Belt) before advancing to third on a throwing error by the Hornets. Kavanagh took a 2-2 count and tapped one to right field, bringing Myers home to tie the game.
Cristian Lopez doubled to right field on a 1-0 count before Yeriel Pastrana singled to shortstop to put two runners on. A fly out for Alabama State put two outs on the board, but Randy Flores cashed in with a single sent up the middle to score Lopez, 2-1, but got caught trying to advance to second, which ended the inning.
Four walks earned by Brooks Bryan, Tremayne Cobb Jr., Aidan Gilroy and Arnett scored the free run in the third, 2-2. The Trojans turned the walks into hits in the fourth when Myers sent an 0-2 single to second base, stole his 28th base of 2024 to second and forced the throwing error for third. Will Butcher sent a 2-0 shot deep to left center for the sac fly, giving Myers a clean path home to take a 3-2 lead.
The bats kept rolling in the fifth when Cobb Jr. singled to left field on a 2-2 count and stole second. A groundout brought Cobb Jr. to third, and Ben Arnett finished the job with a 3-1 single to center field, 4-2.
Troy took off in the sixth when Myers started it with a 2-1 double to right field, followed by a 3-2 single for Kavanagh and an HBP on Butcher to load the bases. The nation's leader in RBIs, Bryan tacked on two more, 6-2, on a single to right field. With Butcher still on third, Kyle Mock earned the sac fly out to center field, 7-2.
A pair of full-count walks opened the eighth, and Gilroy brought both home with a 0-1 double to the right center wall, 9-3. The doubles marathon continued with Arnett, who brought Gilroy home with a 2-1 shot down the left field line for Troy's 11 double-digit game in its last 17. Then, Kavanagh joined the party after Myers earned his third walk, hitting the 100th double of 2024 for Troy and scoring Myers and Arnett, 12-3.
On his birthday, 'The Ringer' Noah Manning entered the mound in relief of Jay Dill, who pitched two innings with a team-high four strikeouts, and allowed just one hit to close the game out with a 12-3 victory.
Clete Hartzog (7-2) got credited with the win after an impressive 2.1 innings, allowing zero hits, runs or earned runs while striking out three.
Head Coach Skylar Meade
"A really good night from the yard across the board. I thought the arms showcased good stuff, and our defense was clean. The offense just grinded like it does and broke through in the second half of the game. It was just a fun night, and tomorrow, we get a much-needed day off, and then we get to work on Thursday. In our system, everything we do counts. That's not symbolic. That's something we live by. And our guys provide that leadership."
