Troy outlasts Georgia Southern to take conference series
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Troy softball team took the series against Georgia Southern (23-20, 6-12 SBC) at Eagle Field after a nail-biting 8-7 victory.
D'Aun Riggs and Cassidy Boltz delivered for the Trojans in today's game. Riggs went 3-for-4 from the plate with three RBIs, a triple and a double. Cassidy Boltz went a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI of her own.
The Trojans (31-17, 11-7 SBC) got off to a good start early in the game. Jade Sinness drew a lead-off walk in the top of the third inning and Riggs brought her home by smashing a ball over the right fielder's head for an RBI triple.
The Eagles answered back quickly, loading the bases in the bottom half of the frame before capitalizing on a throwing error by Audra Thompson that would plate two runs.
In the next inning, a series of walks combined with an infield single by Boltz loaded the bases with two outs for the Trojans. Rebekah Johnson pinch hit for Natalie Turner and drew a walk of her own to tie the game 2-2.
Sinness stepped into the box and ripped a single up the middle to plate two more runs. Riggs cleared the bases with an RBI double to extend the lead to four runs and cap off a five spot in the fourth inning.
Sara Beth Brake added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning with her sixth home run of the season before the Eagles attempted to come back late in the game. In the bottom half of the frame, Savannah Money entered the circle for the Trojans and struggled to find control, allowing back-to-back singles before hitting two batters and walking another which would plate two runs for Georgia Southern and bring the game within two runs at 7-5.
In the next inning, Troy loaded the bases due to a lack of execution by the Eagles' defense and Boltz struck again like she has many times this season with an RBI single that would give the Trojans a three-run lead.
Libby Baker re-entered the circle to close out the game after Kate Peters hit the leadoff batter and Janai Conklin blasted her fourth home run of the season to bring the game within one run at 8-7. With the bases empty, Baker settled in and retired the next three batters in order to shut down the comeback attempt and send Troy back to the Wiregrass with the series win.
Thoughts from Coach Newell
"That was a dogfight, and we are happy to come out on top. It took every last out, every last at-bat, every last pitch and this team kept battling. I am very proud of the determination that this team has. The five spot in the fourth inning was the difference in the game in a lot of ways. You never really know how many runs it's going to take to win a ball game, but it took every single one of them today."
