Men’s Tennis Drops SBC Opener at No. 48 Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. – Troy dropped a tightly-contested match at No. 48 Old Dominion, 4-2, in the Sun Belt Conference opener for both clubs on Wednesday at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center; the loss snapped Troy's six-match winning streak.

Doubles proved once again to be key for Troy (14-3) as the early point proved to be the difference in the match; the Trojans are 0-3 this season when losing the doubles point.

Mario Martinez Serrano and Luciano Alcocer gave Troy an early advantage, winning 6-3 on court three, but the Monarchs battled back to win 6-3 on court two and eventually took the point, winning 7-5 on court one.

ODU (11-4) took a 2-0 lead with a win on court four before Yeary Andres Pastor won his sixth straight match with a 6-4, 6-2 decision on court five. Noah Martens tied the match with a dominant 6-3, 6-4 victory on court three as he improved to 13-3 this spring, with all but one of his wins coming in straight sets.

The Monarchs took a 3-2 lead with a victory on court six and clinched the match on court one, where Mario Martinez dropped a three-set thriller, his first loss of the season (16-1). Carles Anton was locked into a three-set battle of his own on court two, where he was serving down a game but playing with momentum after winning 6-4 in the second set.

Troy continues its road trip at James Madison (7-5) on Friday at 11 a.m. (CT) in what will be the SBC opener for the Dukes, who have won six straight matches.
