Women's Basketball Set for Second Matchup with Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Road warriors on a five-game streak in opposing territory, the Troy women's basketball team prepares for its second matchup with Southern Miss on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Reed Green Coliseum.
On top of five straight road wins, the Trojans (12-8, 9-1 SBC) look to push their win streak to 10 with momentum from the first-ever victory over the Golden Eagles (11-9, 4-6 SBC) eight days ago in Trojan Arena.

Troy women's basketball rides the fourth longest conference win streak into Saturday's matchup after a tough 94-83 victory at ULM Thursday night, where three Trojans managed 20-plus points in Nia Daniel (27), Tai'Sheka Porchia (21) and Makayia Hallmon (21). Ja'Mia Hollings also notched a 15-point, 13-rebound double-double.
Thursday's win saw Troy dominate the rebound game, outmuscling ULM 66-35, three shy from the SBC rebound for single-game rebounds. Of the 66, 30 came via the offensive end for 33 second-chance points. Porchia continued her momentum with 21 points and 16 rebounds (11 offensive), while Daniel was one point shy of a career-high with 27 – converted a career-high 12 free throws.
Sun Belt play has seen four Trojans average double-digits: Daniel (13.9 ppg), Hallmon (17.3 ppg), Porchia (19.7 ppg, 10.4 rpg), Hollings (13.2 ppg, 10.7 rpg). The team has been a staple for the rebound game with 51.5 per game to lead all teams – sit eight rebounds from second (Coastal Carolina – 43.5). Individually, Hollings and Porchia sit one and two in the SBC ranks with 10.7 and 10.1, respectively.
On Jan. 25, the Trojans rolled through Southern Miss in Trojan Arena to a 77-70 victory, which marked the first win over the Golden Eagles in program history. Porchia led Troy with 25 points on a career-high nine made free throws. Hollings dominated the boards with a team-high 15 while scoring 12 points and swiping four steals.
Golden Eagles Glance
After falling to Troy on Jan. 25, the Golden Eagles rattled off back-to-back wins over South Alabama, 77-43, and Louisiana, 55-48. Their most recent win saw a defensive grudge match, where they relied on 27-of-37 shooting at the charity stripe to clinch the victory.
The fourth quarter saw the Golden Eagles explode on the offensive end to win. Melyia Grayson led USM in scoring 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting with 12 rebounds. Dominique Davis and Noelani Cornfield joined her in double-figures with 13 and 10, respectively – all three combined for 20-of-36 from the charity stripe.
USM continues to lead the SBC in field goal percentage with 43.4 while limiting the opposition to 38.6. Grayson leads the charge for shooting as the top shooter in the conference at 55.2 percent to average 20.7 points – ranks third in the SBC and 20th in the nation. Since league play began, she's kept her numbers at 20.4 points (third in SBC) on the top field goal percentage of 57.1.

• With 140 wins in the SBC, Rigby has the third most wins in conference history– sits 53 wins from second (Brian Boyer – 193).
• Last week, Porchia claimed new career-highs in points (35), free throws made (9), free throws attempted (12), field goals made (15), field goals attempted (27) and rebounds (17). She also averaged 30 points on 54.8 percent shooting and 12 rebounds to earn Sun Belt Player of the Week and NCAA Starting Five.
• Porchia's 35-point performance against Arkansas State tied Samantha Tomlinson for the 10th most points scored in Troy D-I for a single game. She also becomes one of two active Trojans (Makayia Hallmon – 2) to score 30-plus points.
• Porchia converted 15 made field goals against the Red Wolves for the seventh most in Troy D-I history for a single game and became the first 15-plus game since Alex Dye (Texas State – March 6, 2021).
