Women’s Basketball Returns to SBC Play Against Texas State

TROY, Ala. – A brief pause in Sun Belt Conference play ends Thursday at 5:15 p.m. in Trojan Arena when Troy women's basketball returns to league play with a second matchup against Texas State.
Opening the basketball doubleheader in Trojan Arena, the Trojans (13-10, 9-3 SBC) return home after a four-game road span, where they split at 2-2 but closed out non-conference play with a third straight victory. The Bobcats (13-12, 3-9 SBC) look to revive their league record, sitting tied for 11th in the standings with six games remaining.

Troy split last week at 1-1, falling to Old Dominion, 63-59, before ending the two-game skid with a double-digit victory, 88-78, over Bowling Green in game two of the MAC-SBC Challenge. Ja'Mia Hollings led the charge, posting player of the week numbers on 22 points with 71.4 percent shooting while seizing a team-high 8.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals.
The long-awaited rematch with Old Dominion didn't go as planned after Troy found itself down 13-2 to open the game at the 2:36 mark. The Trojans managed to battle back, taking the lead with 3:32 remaining in the third off a Zay Dyer layup, 40-39. They managed to expand it to three, 42-39, off a Hollings' lay-in, but Old Dominion, led by SBC Player of the Week Jordan McLaughlin, roared back and finished it at the line, 63-59. Hollings led the team with 16 points, nine rebounds and four steals, but 23 turnovers made the difference.
A career-high 28 points on 12-of-15 from the field by Hollings and a near triple-double by Shaulana Wagner with nine points, 12 rebounds and eight assists put Troy back in the win column, 88-78. The game remained tied as the Trojans entered the fourth, 60-60, but a 9-of-16 shooting performance and a 4-0 turnover battle propelled Troy to victory.
Thursday's matchup marks the second meeting with Texas State after a 92-85 victory on Jan. 18, where Hollings (18), Tai'Sheka Porchia (16), Dyer (15), Makayia Hallmon (14) and Leilani Augmon (12) finished in double-figures. The Trojans dominated the turnover battle, swiping 15 steals to the Bobcats three and shooting 47.1 percent from the field for the win.
Looking for the Sweep
Texas State enters Thursday on a two-game winning streak, defeating Coastal Carolina, 52-49, and Ohio, 80-71, to earn head coach Zenarae Antoine her 200th career win – all at Texas State.
The Bobcats won their game against Ohio from deep as they shot 8-of-16 from behind the arc as Sierra Dickson led with three triples for a career-high 14 points. Ja'Niah Henson scored 22 points, with 11 from Jaylin Foster, as the trio combined for 47 of the Bobcats' 80 points. The third quarter made the difference as Texas State outscored Ohio 23-12, limiting them to 33.3 percent shooting.
With six games remaining in league play before Pensacola, Texas State sits tied with Georgia Southern and Coastal Carolina for 11th, where they would have to play on the tournament's first day. The Bobcats excel from the perimeter, leading the league in perimeter defense at 26 percent while sitting second in 3-point percentage at 33.3.
