Home Sweep Home
Troy fixed its home record with a clean sweep over James Madison, 87-74, and the largest margin of victory over an SBC opponent in program history of 46 with Louisiana, 90-44. The weekend saw breakout performances by Zay Dyer, averaging 15.5 points and 9.5 rebounds. Makayia Hallmon stood as the leading scorer at 19.5 points and Ja'Mia Hollings averaged a double-double on 11.5 points and 11 rebounds.
Wednesday's doubleheader against Louisiana looked to be a tight contest after Troy trailed 13-11 to the Ragin' Cajuns. However, in the following 30 minutes of play, Troy outscored Louisiana 79-31 on a 55.1 percent clip. Dyer produced a season-high 18 points and nine rebounds to lead Troy to the 46-point victory.
Like Wednesday, Troy and James Madison stayed close through the first half as Troy went into the locker room down 37-35. And similar to Louisiana, Troy exploded offensively in the third, outscoring the Dukes 31-18 on 10 of Hallmon's 27 points. Unlike Wednesday, JMU managed to claw back within six, but the pair in Hollings and Hallmon ballooned it back to 16 by the buzzer.
Last season, Troy swept the Bobcats in both meetings. The first saw Nia Daniel and Hallmon produce 15 points to defeat Texas State 79-63. Then, in San Marcos, it took a 28-point performance by Tai'Sheka Porchia, matched with a pair of 15-rebound performances by Porchia and Hollings, to win 84-78. Troy dominated the rebound and turnover game as a unit, winning both battles, 91-74 and 32-22, respectively.
Beating the Bobcats
Texas State sits opposite Troy as it's fallen in three straight at the hands of ULM, Arkansas State and Georgia State. Their only victory in SBC play was a 67-58 win over App State on Jan. 4.
Their most recent loss to ULM saw the Bobcats allow the Warhawks to jump out to a 25-13 lead after 10 minutes of play and push it to 49-32 by halftime. The second half saw the Bobcats take control to end the game, 73-63. Individually, it was all Ja'Niah Henson with 21 points, but a 6-for-16 shooting performance wasn't enough.
Henson remains one of the most talented guards in the SBC as she ranks in the top 10 for points (239), three-pointers per game (1.88), free throws (61) and leads the league and sits fourth in the nation in free throw percentage (92.4). Down low, Tiffany Tullis holds her own as the eighth-ranked rebounder in the conference with 7.2. She matches her rebound totals with points per game on 45.5 percent from the field.
