TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's golf team is back on the course this weekend as it opens the 2023-2024 season in Mobile, Ala., for the USA Intercollegiate Tournament.
Hosted by South Alabama, the tournament will have nine competitors (Georgia State, Little Rock, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, South Alabama, Southern Mississippi, Tennessee Tech, ULM) on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. The Trojans tee off with the lineup as Laura Fangmeyer, Katelynn Altese, Alyssa Mercado, Samantha Straight and Manya Saini for the 3-day weekend. Bringing in 18 holes daily, the tournament will begin on Saturday and end on Sunday, Labor Day.
What: USA Intercollegiate Tournament
Where: Mobile, Ala. – Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail
When: Saturday, Sept. 2 – Monday, Sept. 4
Who: Georgia State, Little Rock, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, South Alabama, Southern Mississippi, Tennessee Tech, ULM
Lineup: Fangmeyer, Altese, Mercado, Straight, Saini
"This group has worked extremely hard leading up to this golf tournament," head coach Randy Keck said. "We come off some really good qualifying rounds and are excited to go this week. I think there will be a lot of nerves and anxiousness, but there's also a lot of talent. Once we get the nerves calmed and get comfortable, I'm sure we will see some good golf this weekend."
Keck will begin his seventh season, coming off a record-breaking season. The Trojans set new school records at the 54 and 36-hole thresholds and gained six top-four finishes in 2022-23.
The seven returning players welcome freshman Saini to the team. Ranked as the No. 13 junior in her home country of India, she was an early signee to the team in November of 2022. Saini will join a young group of four sophomores, two juniors, and one senior.
"A lot of these girls played in the lineup last year," Keck said. "So, it's exciting because we have a really young team but a really experienced team. And we are going to build off a lot of good things that happened last year."
The Trojans hope to establish themselves against the five Sun Belt teams appearing in Mobile. Last spring, the Trojans finished tenth in the 2023 Sun Belt Championship. Fangmeyer led the Trojans with a team-best three birdies in the previous round to shoot 6-over, finishing 26th place.
After an 11th-place finish in last year's USA Intercollegiate Tournament, the Trojans are hungry for a winning weekend.
"Anytime you're going to play at South, you know there's going to be a different energy," Keck said. "We get along with them and they have a great program. But we are going there to take the trophy from them and bring it to Troy."
