GREENVILLE, N.C. – Mara Dajer carded four birdies and shot a 1-under 71 to lead Troy in Tuesday's final round of the Pirate Collegiate Classic, hosted by East Carolina at the Greenville Country Club.
The Trojans finished eighth overall but continued to show improved play, totaling an 882, which would have been their best score in any tournament last season.
Troy golfers combined for three rounds under-par in the tournament – thanks to two on Monday from Roberta Alvarez – pushing its season total to three through two events, already a third of last year's total.
Alvarez tied for sixth place individually, shooting 4-under for the week. She shot rounds of 69 and 70 on Monday, followed by a solid 73 on Tuesday with four birdies. She closed the tournament with 14 total birdies on her card, tied for the third-most in the field. A first-year player, Alvarez was 7-under on the par 5s, tied for second in the field.
Dajer made the turn at 2-under after birdies on the second, fifth and ninth, then dropped one stroke on the back nine for her first round in the red this season, after flirting with the par line last week with rounds of 1-over and even in the season-opener.
NC State won the team title by a commanding nine shots over UNC Greensboro, as the Wolfpack shot 13-under as a team. East Carolina finished even for the week and placed third, while Longwood and Stetson rounded out the top five. Troy finished eight shots back of Sun Belt foe App State but was four shots better than their other SBC rival in the field, James Madison.
Evelyn Tankersley climbed 12 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 62nd place thanks to a season-best 73, where she carded four birdies to turn in Troy's number two bag of the day along with Alvarez.
Manya Saini added a pair of birdies as she shot 75 on the day and tied for 31st place at 6-over while Anna Roldan Sewald closed out with a 79 to finish 56th overall.
Following back-to-back tournaments, the Trojans have almost a month off before closing out the fall with the Lady Red Wolves Classic (Oct. 12-13) and Pat Bradley Invitational (Oct. 26-27).
