TROY, Ala. – Mason Bennett joined seven Sun Belt student-athletes to be awarded a Sun Belt Conference Postgraduate Scholarship, the league office announced Thursday morning.
"Mason Bennett has been one of the best people, not just athlete, I've been associated with in my years of coaching," director of track and field / cross country Marc Davis said. "I cannot think of anyone more deserving. He is a tireless worker. More importantly, he never gives up. I am proud of this young man. He will succeed and is exactly what a student-athlete should strive for."
Bennett was selected by the Sun Belt Postgraduate Scholarship Committee, comprised of Faculty Athletic Representatives from across the conference, for a scholarship worth $3,750.
The scholarships are awarded to selected student-athletes with stated intentions to pursue a graduate degree following the completion of their undergraduate requirements and are sent directly to the graduate school of each recipient's choice.
The Panama City Beach, Fla., native has been with Troy since 2019-20 and has earned two degrees. He completed his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (Economics) with a 4.0 GPA in three years before graduating in May with a Master in Business Administration with another perfect 4.0 GPA. Bennett continues his education this fall at the Florida State University College of Law, pursuing the Juris Doctorate.
A J.R. Arnold High School graduate, Bennett has earned Sun Belt Commissioner's List (3.5-4.0 GPA) for each academic year at Troy. As of yesterday, Bennett has also been placed on the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team.
On the track, Bennett holds the program's top time for 2023 in the 3,000m on a second-place finish at the Tiger Track Classic. He also ran the top mark in the 10,000m at the Sun Belt Championship of 33:12.47 for 14th.
His primary event for the season was the 5,000m, where he competed on three occasions: the second, third and fourth top marks for Troy. His personal best came at the Crimson Tide Invitational for 26th with a time of 15:48.75.
