4/27/2023 12:40:00 PM | Softball
TROY, Ala. – The senior celebration begins for Kelly Horne, Katelynn de Leon, Leanna Johnson and Katie Lively when the Troy softball program invites Georgia Southern for the final weekend at the Troy Softball Complex—festivities peak on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. with the official senior day game.
The Trojans (30-15-1, 11-6-1 SBC) look to use this series to get back on track after winning two games over their last eight to fall to fourth in the standings with two weeks left in the regular season. Conversely, the Soaring Eagles (17-28, 6-12 SBC) are in a similar mindset losing their last six.

Shot Heard Around the Belt
The weekend was bittersweet for the Trojans. On the bright side, Troy opened the series with its first win, 8-7, against the Ragin' Cajuns in 10 games on a walk-off two-run homer from Audra Thompson. But on the poor end, the Trojans lost the series with two straight losses, 9-2 and 6-1.
Libby Baker continues to shine as the only Trojan with double-digit total bases over the weekend. The Skipperville, Ala., native overtook Taylor McKinney as the leader in homers (12) after rocketing out two. Thompson joined Baker and Jade Sinness as a trio with three RBIs with her walk-off. All five pitchers saw action against Louisiana, with Haley Pittman earning the lowest ERA at 2.33.
Johnson enters the weekend with one more historic mark on her mind; 100 wins. Johnson has accumulated 99 total wins in her five-year career, including 22 in 2023. She has been denied her last two starts, but a 6-0 record against the Soaring Eagles puts her in a prime position.
End the Losing Streak
Six straight losses carry the Soaring Eagles into the weekend. In that span, Georgia Southern has been outscored 36-9. Of the six straight, only three came from a Sun Belt opponent after South Alabama swept the weekend.
The Soaring Eagles must break a poor trend on the road, as the team is 5-17 when they are away from Eagle Field. Their last road trip sent them to North Florida for a mid-week doubleheader. Game two was the worst-case scenario as the Soaring Eagles gave up a no-hitter after a two-run first inning for the Ospreys was the difference in the first.
Georgia Southern has struggled at the plate in 2023 with the second-most strikeouts (239) in the conference combined with the ninth-best batting average at .243. Despite the low average overall, Emma Davis ranks 10thin the SBC at .369 while also sitting 10th in on-base percentage (.442).
