TROY, Ala. – With hopes of building off a massive 4-2 victory over Marshall, Troy prepares to welcome Georgia State to the Lunsford Tennis Complex on noon Saturday morning.
At the halfway point of the Sun Belt Schedule, the Trojans sit eighth with a 9-5, 2-3 SBC record – three matches outside a first-round bye. Troy looks to capitalize on the Panthers' (1-12, 1-3 SBC) struggles for its second straight conference win.
Match Information
Location: Troy, Ala. – Lunsford Tennis Complex
The Matchup: Troy (9-5, 2-3 SBC) vs. Georgia State (1-12, 1-3 SBC)
When: Saturday, April 1 – 12 p.m.
Split it at Home
Two close matches summarized the Trojans' weekend at home. The weekend started with a close loss to App State as the Trojans were up 3-2 with courts three and one in action. Valeriia Avdeeva fought until the end but couldn't survive, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), which put the pressure on Kristina Kukaras, who split her first two sets 1-6, 6-3. The junior couldn't regain the momentum, losing the point, 6-2, and the match, 4-3.
Sunday saw redemption for Troy against Marshall, with the roles of the previous day reversed. Down 3-2, Avdeeva got her redemption with a huge 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory to leave Franziska Ahrend on court six to decide the fate of Troy.
Panthers' Struggles
One year following a historic 17-6, 9-1 season, the Panthers find themselves last in the SBC in overall win percentage at .077. GSU's last win came on March 11 when they survived Southern Miss, 4-3. Their next closest victory came on Feb. 11 at Samford, 4-3.
The Panthers went scoreless over the weekend, suffering sweeps at the hands of Marshall and Appalachian State. Eva Chivu and Troy graduate Michelle Ncube were the only ones to win a set over the weekend. Chivu claimed hers in the second set against Marshall's Emma Vanderheden, while Ncube's win was in the first set against the Mountaineers.
