Troy Suffers Late Loss to App State

TROY, Ala. – A strong start for Troy came apart in the final two matches at the Lunsford Tennis Complex for the team's second straight loss against Appalachian State, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon.
The Trojans (8-5, 1-3 SBC) drop their second straight at home to fall to 4-4, while the Mountaineers (6-5, 3-1 SBC) improve to 3-4 on the road.
Troy got a strong start in doubles when Andrea Widing / Valeriia Avdeeva took care of business on court one, 6-2. But, after Maria Guirguis / Hagar Amin fell 6-4 on court two, Kristina Kukaras / Franziska Ahrend were forced into a must-win on court three. The sides went back and forth, but the pair of Trojans pulled away late to win 7-5 for the 1-0 lead.
App State quickly tied the match, 1-1, in singles as Erika Dodridge dominated court five, 6-0, 6-1. Guirguis brought Troy back into the lead, 2-1, after winning both sets convincingly 6-3, 6-4.
Both sides delivered blows to end with Troy being one point from the win, 3-2, after Amin fell 6-0, 6-2, and Ahrend won 6-4, 6-1.
The score set up the Trojans for the win, with courts three and one holding Avdeeva and Kukaras, respectively. Avdeeva fell early in set one, 6-3, before set two forced a tiebreaker. The freshman fought with Pate Maggie until the end, where the Mountaineer pulled away for a 7-6 (8-6) victory to tie the match and put all the pressure on Kukaras.
Kukaras dominated her first set to lead 6-1. However, the following set saw Jansen Helena make a comeback, forcing the third set with a 6-3 win. The next set had Jansen lead from start to finish, 6-2, for the win, 4-3.
