Women’s Tennis Captures Win in First Meeting with Marshall

TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's tennis program jumps back to the win column with a 4-2 win over Marshall in the program's first meeting on Sunday morning at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.

At the halfway point in the Trojans' (9-5, 2-3 SBC) six-match homestand, the team sits 5-4 at home after a 1-2 record in their two weeks.

Entering singles competition, Troy found itself down 1-0 to the Thundering Herd (9-6, 3-2 SBC) despite a 6-1 domination on court three from Kristina Kukaras / Franziska Ahrend.

The Trojans didn't take long to grab their first lead of the match, 2-1, on wins from Maria Guirguis on court four and Kukaras on court one. The freshman and Aisling McGrane kept things close, but Guirguis pulled away late each time for a 6-4 victory in both sets. Kukaras had the same result, taking both her sets by a score of 6-3.

Marshall tied the match up, 2-2, on court two after Johanna Strom handed Hagar Amin her second singles loss on the weekend. But Valeriia Avdeeva was there to respond on court three for a 3-2 lead. The Russia native pulled out a pivotal win in the tiebreaker for set one, 7-6 (7-4), before taking care of business in set two, 6-4.

Courts five and six had intense battles after Olivia Elliott and Ahrend fell in their first set, 6-3, 6-4, respectively. Both Trojans fired back in their second set to force the third set on 6-2 victories. With Elliott stuck with Andjela Lopicic, 2-2, on court five, Ahrend clinched match point, swiftly winning 6-2.
