HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Troy battled back on multiple occasions and led by as many as five points late in the third quarter but couldn't finish the job Wednesday night, as they fell to Southern Miss for the second time this season 88-79 in the penultimate game of the regular season from Reed Green Coliseum.
Despite the loss, the Trojans still have their goals in front of them as they have a chance to clinch a share of the Sun Belt regular season title on Friday as they take on in-state rival South Alabama. Troy will be doing a bit of scoreboard watching as they will need a loss by James Madison to Marshall on Friday as well to help them out.
Mississippi native Ja'Mia Hollings had her seventh double-double in her last 10 games, finishing with 18 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. With a team-high 22 points, Makayia Hallmon led both teams in scoring, with fellow starters Nia Daniel and Tai'Sheka Porchia also in double figures.
For Southern Miss (19-9, 12-5), Melyia Grayson had a game-high 23 points, and Domonique Davis followed with 19. The Golden eagles shot 49 percent from the field compared to 35 percent from the Trojans. Despite 18 turnovers by the host, the Trojans were only able to score 12 points off those turnovers.
There was a total of four three-pointers made between the two teams, but it was Southern Miss leading in the rebounding department 47 to 46.
After seeing themselves down in the first quarter, the Trojans used a 10-0 run in the second to gain the eventual lead, but Southern Miss just never went away, taking a one-point lead into the locker room at halftime.
The fourth quarter was where the game was won for Southern Miss as they made it difficult for the Trojan offense as Troy went nearly five minutes without a basket. With the score 63-61 and the Trojans down by two, the hosts used a 9-0 spurt to go up 11 points before Hallmon was able to end the drought.
With just over two minutes left in the ballgame, Troy cut the deficit to five points, as it was Hallmon again coming up with the big basket as she nailed a three-pointer to make it 79-74.
Unfortunately for Troy, that's as close as they were able to get as Southern Miss was able to hold on for the win.
The regular season will come to an end On Friday, February 24, at 7 p.m. in Mobile as the Trojans take on South Alabama for the second time this season.
