Women Fall at South Alabama in Regular Season Finale

MOBILE, Ala. – Kelsey Thompson hit a jumper as time expired to lift South Alabama past Troy, 60-59, in the regular season finale Friday evening in the Mitchell Center.

Troy (17-12, 12-6 SBC) led by three, 59-56, after a Makayia Hallmon jumper with 49 seconds remaining. However, the Trojans turned the ball over with 13 seconds left after a missed jumper by the Jaguars, and Casey Ferguson hit two free throws to close the gap to one with 10 seconds to play. The Jags fouled Jada Walton with four seconds remaining, and she missed both attempts.

South Alabama (7-22, 3-15) called timeout to advance the ball to midcourt, where Thompson took the inbounds pass, dribbled, and threw up a prayer that went in. She finished with a game-high 22 points, while Ferguson added 16 points, 14 of which came in the first quarter when she hit 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.

The Jags led 25-16 after the first quarter, but the Trojans cut the deficit to just two at the half after holding South Alabama to just five points in the second quarter.

Hallmon led the Trojans with 15 points, while Tai'Sheka Porchia added 12 points and Walton finished with 10. Porchia added a game-high 11 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season.

Neither team shot well from the floor, with the Trojans hitting just 35 percent on 25-of-71 shooting, including 3-of-11 from beyond the arc. Troy also struggled from the free throw line making just 6-of-12 attempts. South Alabama connected on just 32.8 percent of its shots but made eight from deep. The Trojans' 59 points were a season low as they lost for the fourth time in the past six games.

Troy expects to enter the Sun Belt Conference Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will receive a double-bye, beginning play at 2 p.m. on Friday.
