Women's Basketball Prepares for Power-Five Road Trip to Athens

TROY, Ala. – A date with its second power-five opponent of 2023-24 awaits the Troy women's basketball program Wednesday at 10 a.m. against Georgia. The game is set at the Stegeman Coliseum and SEC Network+.
Still searching for their first win, the Trojans (0-5) look to claim the fourth win over an SEC team in program history – overall, it is 3-50 against the SEC. Wednesday also marks the first meeting between Troy and the Bulldogs (6-2).

Finding Our Identity
Troy dropped its fifth straight of 2023-24 in Memphis, Tenn., on Saturday night, 100-88. Troy found itself down by as much as 29 points on two occasions before roaring back in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Tigers 29-20 on 50 percent from the field to mount a comeback.
Down 25, 93-68, with 5:10 left, Daniel sparked the comeback at the charity stripe as the Trojans proceeded to outscore Memphis 20-7 in the final five minutes. The comeback included nine unanswered in the remaining 1:39 and six points from Sara Carvajal Caro.
Nia Daniel (17), Zay Dyer (15), Tai'Sheka Porchia (13), Makayia Hallmon (13) and Shaulana Wagner (11) all produced double-figures in the win. Also, Dyer managed her first double-double as she added 10 rebounds to her stat line.
Despite the 0-5 start, Troy ranks in the top four in bench points (second - 30), field goal percentage
defense (fourth - 34.7) and steals (third - 10.8) in the Sun Belt Conference.

Georgia enters Wednesday after a blowout victory against Furman, 85-55, at the Coliseum. The Bulldogs dominated all but the second quarter, outscoring Furman 72-43 in the remaining three quarters combined. Defensively, Georgia limited Furman to 34.4 percent from the field, 23.3 percent from deep, and 50 percent from the charity stripe.
Zoesha Smith produced an 18-point, 5-assist, 8-rebound, 3-steal and 1-block performance in the 30-point victory. Smith's performance boosted her into average double-figures at 12.9 to rank second for the Bulldogs. Atop the leaderboard is Javyn Nicholson, who averages 16.3 points on 44.6 percent shooting while having 8.8 rebounds – scored a team-high 20 points on two occasions (Duke, Mercer).
The Bulldogs already matched up against SBC foe Georgia Southern on Nov. 13, winning 85-59 after controlling the entirety of the game. Georgia swarmed the Soaring Eagles, limiting them to 29.3 percent from the field and 18.8 from deep while scoring 44 points in the paint for the victory.

• The Trojans battled back against Memphis, falling by 12 despite not making a single 3-pointer (0-of-8) - first time since Feb. 2, 2023, at Texas State (0-of-13).
• For the first time in her career as a Trojan, newcomer Dyer secured her first double-double on 15 points and 10 rebounds.
• Newcomer Wagner continues to be an offensive force. Coming from a JUCO program (Wabash Valley), she's scored double-figures in 4-of-5 games.
• Troy's identity remains crashing the boards, ranking ninth nationally with 17.4 per game. The team recently had their season-high of 25 against Memphis.
• Ranked 21st in the NCAA and second in the Sun Belt Conference, Porchia leads the team in offensive rebounds at 4.0.
• Compared to the other Sun Belt teams, Troy ranks in the top four in bench points (second - 30), field goal percentage defense (fourth - 34.7) and steals (third - 10.8).
• Makayia Hallmon joined elite company at the buzzer against Belmont, nailing the triple for her 1,000th career point. She's scored 460 of those as a Trojan on 178 made field goals, 35 triples and 69 free throws. Outside of Troy, Hallmon spent three seasons with Louisiana, where she scored 541 points over three seasons.
• The stat leaders come in pairs for points and assists through the first five games, with either Wagner or Sharonica Hartsfield leading the team in assists and either Nia Daniel or Ja'Mia Hollings atop the charts in points – season-high in assists is Hartsfield against Ball State (10) and points is Daniel at Tennessee (19).
• Porchia remains the only Trojan who has yet to see a single-figure scoring performance in 2023-24, scoring 10, 10, 18, 11 and 13, respectively, through the first five games.
