Troy Women’s Basketball Opens Sun Belt Schedule by Hosting Georgia State

TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's basketball program prepares to embark on its Sun Belt Conference journey when the team invites Georgia State to Trojan Arena on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Despite one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the nation, Troy (3-7) has turned its season around by going 3-2 in the last five games, including back-to-back wins for the first time since winning four straight from Jan. 26 – Feb. 4, 2023. The Panthers (6-4) also ride a two-game winning streak heading into SBC play with victories over Clemson and LaGrange.

Christmas Champions
After back-to-back matchups against SFA and New Mexico State, the Trojans were crowned the APSU Christmas Classic Champions, with Makayia Hallmon and Tai'Sheka Porchia earning APSU All-Tournament team. Hallmon averaged 20 points over the two contests, while Porchia had 15 points and 6.5 rebounds.
Both wins were double-digit victories as Nia Daniel led the team with a 21-point, 4-steal, 5-rebound and 2-assist performance to defeat the Lumberjacks 98-78. The Trojans forced a season-high 27 turnovers as a unit and led from the opening tip.
The Trojans followed the SFA victory with a 15-point win over New Mexico State, 81-66, on a season-high 55.9 percent from the field. Hallmon led the way with her second career 30-point performance on 12-of-19 from the field.
After an 0-5 start, the Trojans have redeemed their season by going 3-2 in the last five. In those five games, Troy's shooting percentage rose from 35.6 percent to 42.8 while increasing its turnover margin from plus-0.4 to plus-7.4.
Prepare for the Panthers
The Panthers enter conference play by also turning their season around to rise above .500 with a win over ACC opponent Clemson, 78-72, and LaGrange, 93-51. Their win over LaGrange saw the Panthers shoot 48.8 percent from the field while limiting LaGrange to 28.8.
Georgia State managed a season-high 93 points in the victory, with Christeina Bryan leading the way on 19 points – Mya Williams followed her with 14 points on four made triples. The season's leading scorer, Mikyla Tolivert, went the passing route in the win, dishing out 12 assists – averages 13.8 points.
Non-conference play saw the Panthers dominate the conference in blocks, ranking second in the league and 61st in the nation with 3.8 per game. Georgia State also has the Sun Belt's leader in assist/turnover ratio, Crystal Henderson, at 2.21.
SBC Opener Numbers
• At 5-10, Leilani Guion became a defense menace against New Mexico State when she rejected a career-high of two shots to lead the Trojans this season.
• Hallmon shot 12-of-19 for 30 points in the victory over New Mexico State. Her 12 field goals marked the first time a Trojan has made 10-plus in a game since Amber Leggett went 12-of-15 against Coastal Carolina on Feb. 16, 2023. Also, her 30-point performance was the second of her career, as she remains the lone Trojan to score 30-plus points in a single game.
• Through 10 non-conference games, four Trojans averaged double-figures in the score column. Hallmon leads them with 16.6, followed by Daniel (12.0), Porchia (11.7) and Ja'Mia Hollings (11.6).
• With two double-digit performances in the APSU Christmas Tournament, Hallmon (30) and Porchia (13) claimed their 30th career 10-plus point game.
