Troy Drops Double Overtime Heartbreaker to Oregon State
11/10/2023 10:14:00 PM | Basketball (M)
CORVALLIS, Ore. – After going back and forth for two halves and two overtime periods, Troy men's basketball falls in a heartbreak to power-five opponent Oregon State 81-80 in the Gill Coliseum Friday night.
With six seconds left and down two, Oregon State's (2-0) Jordan Pope got to the paint and made a layup while drawing a foul. Pope completed the three-point play to give the Beavers a one-point lead and Aamer Muhammad missed a three-pointer at the buzzer to end the game.
Neither overtime period would have happened if not for Thomas Dowd's heroics as the regulation buzzer sounded. With less than two seconds left, Dowd banked in a three-pointer from the left elbow at the horn to tie the game for Troy (1-2) at 61.
Dowd finished the night with 22 points on 7-12 shooting and 5-7 from 3-point range. The Dothan freshman led the Trojans in scoring and rebounds with eight.
Troy had leads during both overtime periods but just couldn't quite put it away. It's the first double-overtime game Troy has played since the program lost to UT-Arlington 87-86 back on March 6, 2014, in Trojan Arena.
Four Trojans finished in double figures. Muhammad had 15 while Christyon Eugene and Tayton Conerway each had 11.
Troy outrebounded its opponent for the third straight game, as they pulled down 47 rebounds compared to the Beavers 43.
By the Numbers
• Oregon State shot 42.4 percent from the field and 23.8 percent from three.
• Troy had 23 turnovers and forced 21.
• The Beavers outscored Troy 26-14 off turnovers.
• Troy committed a season-high 33 fouls while drawing 25.
• The Troy bench once again stepped up as they had 27 points from the bench compared to the Beavers's 13. Conerway led the charge with 11.
• The Trojans beat the Beavers in the steal game, ending the night with 10 steals to their eight.
• Dowd's 22-point performance marks his second career double-digit night for points and his first with 20-plus.
Hear from Coach Cross
Head coach Scott Cross gave his thoughts following the game:
"We were right there. We had the lead. The one thing we couldn't do was give up a three-pointer or an and-one. Very disappointing. Positive, is that we outrebounded a team that is far superior to us in terms of size. They play in the Pac-12, that's a good sign for us. I can't say enough good things about the way Thomas Dowd played for us tonight. To do that against a Pac-12 team, as a freshman, is absolutely amazing."
