**After this was released, the Sun Belt announced that teams would attempt to play 36 holes on Sunday due to the threat of bad weather on Monday. Teams will play until darkness Sunday and complete any necessary holes Monday.**
TROY, Ala. – First-year head coach Forrest Schultz leads his Troy men's golf team into familiar territory this weekend as the Trojans open play at the Sun Belt Conference Championship on Sunday at the Mystic Creek Golf Club in El Dorado, Ark.
Schultz was a high school standout at Parkers Chapel High School in El Dorado and spent nine seasons coaching at nearby Henderson State. Mystic Creek, which tortured Sun Belt golfers last season to an average score of 78.64, is a familiar course for Schultz. The course is set up to play at 7,293 yards for the Sun Belt Championship, which will feature three days of stroke play before the top four teams square off in match play.
"We let all the horror stories out about this course from the guys who played it last year and then said, 'now that it's out there, there is a better way to do it,'" Schultz said. "We know it will depend on what the green speed is; that is going to be huge. If the greens are a little slower, it won't be as difficult of a golf course. Still a tough course, but the green speeds they played last year were just on the edge of crazy. We've been in the film room using our software to breakdown the course and visualize what they will face. I hope that is going to take some of the edge off the guys and the challenge that awaits."
Troy enters the Sun Belt Championship as the No. 9 seed, based on Golfstat national rankings, but the Trojans have a league-best three wins this season and rank fifth with a 2.50 score vs. par.
"I feel good about where we are at heading into this weekend," Schultz said. "We've been focused on the six guys traveling and doing some different stuff which has made our prep work unique, and it's all been geared to Mystic Creek. So, we're excited to go play."
True freshman Brantley Scott leads Troy into the weekend with a -0.03 score vs. par, 71.77 stroke average and 15 rounds under par. He has played nine of his 30 rounds in the 60s this season and finished in the top 10 in four of 10 tournaments (top 25 nine times).
The Trojans had a strong spring season which saw them win three consecutive tournaments and post a 288.67 stroke average, more than two shots better than their fall mark. Troy has played nine rounds under par as a team, combined for 49 individual rounds under par, and posted a 95-45-1 record. Last year, Troy had one team round under par, 21 individual rounds under par and a 21-79 overall record.
Will McFadden enters the SBC Championship just nine overall strokes behind Scott on the season, good for a 0.27 score vs. par and 72.07 stroke average. He has shot in the red 14 times and is the lone Trojan to have all 30 of his individual rounds count towards the team card.
Nicklas Borrmann finished the season strong with finishes of 13th, 26th and 32nd, including a 5-under at the Bash at the Beach. He will carry a 74.08 average and 2.32 score vs. par with him into the championship. Jake Springer, another freshman, is third on the team with seven rounds under par and Kyle Cornelius is coming two top 10s and a top 25 in his last four events.
Troy opens along with UT Arlington and Texas State beginning at 7:30 a.m. off the No. 1 tee box.
