EL DORADO, Ark. – Sunday's opening two rounds of the Sun Belt Championship did not go as planned for the Troy men's golf team as the Trojans are in 12th place, and 15 shots off the mark for qualifying for match play as play opened at Mystic Creek.
The Trojans dug an early hole after shooting 27-over par in the opening round before rebounding with a 12-over 300 in the second round; Troy's afternoon tally was eighth-best in the field. Teams played 36 holes on Sunday due to the threat of inclement weather on Monday.
Brantley Scott carded four birdies in the two rounds and is Troy's leader in the clubhouse at 4-over par in a tie for 18thplace. He opened with a 4-over 76 in the morning before bouncing back with a 2-over 74 in the afternoon.
Kyle Cornelius is four shots back in a tie for 33rd place at 10-over with a birdie in each of the two rounds, while Will McFadden is tied for 39th place at 11-over after combining for four birdies. Nicklas Borrmann led Troy with six birdies, but a flurry of double-bogeys in the opening round pushed his card to 13-over for the day, good for a tie for 48th place. Jake Springer is tied for 52nd place at 15-over.
Little Rock leads at 6-over par, followed by Georgia Southern (+8), UT Arlington (+18) and Georgia State (+24). The top four teams following Tuesday's third round will qualify for match play.
