TROY, Ala. – Powered by a one-hitter from sophomore Libby Baker, Troy downed Georgia State, 4-2, to pick up its fourth consecutive series win Saturday at the Troy Softball Complex.
With the series win, the Trojans (22-9, 8-3 Sun Belt) have won the first four conference series for the first time since 2008.
Georgia State (12-19, 3-5 Sun Belt) plated a run in the top of the opening frame off a Troy fielding error. However, Troy's offense retaliated in the bottom half of the first with a pair of runs to claim an early lead.
Jade Sinness led off with a single to center field. Kelly Horne then drew a walk to set up Libby Baker for a sacrifice bunt to put a pair of runners in scoring position.
Sinness crossed home plate off a wild pitch to even the contest just a pitch later. With Horne on third, freshman Taylor McKinney ripped a single up-the-middle to tack on the second run.
The Trojan offense continued to produce in the bottom of the second after Baker (6-3) worked around a leadoff walk to hold the Panther scoreless in the top half of the second.
Katelynn de Leon ignited the offense with a double to deep right-center field. After another sacrifice bunt put a runner on third, Logan Calhoun came through with an infield single to give Troy a 3-1 lead.
Troy tacked on its fourth and final run in the bottom of the third after McKinney legged out an old fashion little league home run, thanks to a throwing error by the Panther second baseman.
After Baker gave up her lone hit in the top of the third, Georgia State picked up its second run of the game off a trio of wild pitches in the top of the fifth.
However, Baker retired six of the final seven batters, allowing just a walk, to pick up her sixth win of the season.
Sophie Mooney (2-5) suffered the loss for Georgia State after giving up three runs, five hits and a pair of walks.
Quotable – Co-Interim Head Coach Holly Ward
"I am super proud of the team. Getting the series win in game two is always awesome. Libby pitched a great game, and Kate had her back behind the plate. The defense played really well. We scored some runs early, and then, Libby was able to hold Georgia State off. It was a very good day all around."
