STATESBORO, Ga. – After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Troy softball team roared back with a three-run fifth inning to take down Georgia Southern 4-2. The Trojans (28-17, 8-10 SBC) took down the Eagles (19-26, 6-12 SBC) to earn their first Sun Belt Conference road sweep since 2023.
In Troy's big fifth inning, Dailynn Motes tied the game at 2-2 with a laser to left-center field. She finished the game 2-for-3. Mia Tidmore came through with two outs in the fifth, slapping an infield single to shortstop to score two and give Troy the lead.
Abby Lovell earned the save, allowing just one hit over three innings of work. Following a strong outing yesterday, Ella Cunningham (7-4) earned the win with 3.1 innings of scoreless ball in relief, striking out three – she also went 1-for-2 at the plate.
While Makaley Boswell crushed a double over the right fielder's head in the first, a trio of groundouts helped the Eagles get out of the first inning unscathed. Boswell's 15th double tied her for the ninth most by a Trojan in a single season.
Georgia Southern took the lead following a single, two wild pitches and a groundout in the bottom of the first. The Eagles went up 2-0, and Cunningham entered to pitch and closed out the inning with a strikeout.
Cunningham led off the second with a single, and Troy cut the deficit in half on a Georgia Southern error. In the bottom half, Cunningham hung a zero thanks in part to a dime from Megan Loftis in centerfield to catch a runner at third.
In the third, Cunningham held the Eagles scoreless again, and the outfield continued to play stellar defense with McKinnon Howard making a slick catch in left. Despite Cunningham drawing a walk at the dish, the Trojans weren't able to score in the fourth inning.
Although Georgia Southern threatened in the bottom of the fourth, Cunningham punched out two batters in a row to strand two runners.
Leading off the fifth inning, Motes lined a solo homer to left-center field to knot it at 2-2. With two on and two out in the inning, Tidmore bounced an infield single to shortstop to give Troy a 4-2 lead.
Lovell entered in the bottom of the fifth looking to hold the lead and posted a scoreless inning. She hung another zero in the sixth inning.
Boswell punched a single to center field in the seventh, but Georgia Southern ended the inning. Lovell finished the game off to earn her fourth save of the year and second of the weekend.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"It was a good weekend to get three wins here in Statesboro against Georgia Southern, a team that was a game ahead of us in the standings before we showed up. I talked to Esmee a bit postgame, and she was happy to step up this weekend – she's somebody that we've relied on heavily, and although she didn't have her best stuff here I told her to keep her head up because we'll go right back to her. Ella Cunningham looked really good in middle relief, and Abby came in to close the game. [Lovell] was stellar the whole weekend, and she closed the door all three games. Offensively, I think about Dailynn Motes and the home run she hit in that three-run fifth inning. Being behind and not pressing or getting too anxious to take care of business was big. I'm really happy for this team and for the sweep."
