TROY, Ala. – Troy Softball dropped the series finale to Georgia State, 4-0, Sunday at the Troy Softball Complex. Despite the loss, the Trojans have clinched four consecutive Sun Belt series wins.
The Sunday finale proved to be a pitchers' duel early, with all four runs in the contest being plated in the sixth and seventh innings. Both sides combined for one for hit through the opening six frames on the contest.
Georgia State (13-19, 4-5 Sun Belt) picked up an infield single in the opening frame after miscommunication between the Trojan infielders; however, Johnson retired the next seven straight to hold the Panthers without another base runner.
In the bottom of the third, Logan Calhoun reached on a hit by pitch but was left stranded. In similar fashion, Georgia State saw its leadoff runner get aboard after being hit by a pitch in the top of the fourth, but Candela Figueroa caught her trying to take second to clear the base paths.
Troy (22-10, 8-4 Sun Belt) saw its best look of the afternoon when a hit by pitch and a walk put a pair of runners on in the bottom of the fifth, but a pop up stranded the runners.
The Panthers broke the scoreless streak when Emily Brown tripled down the left-field line to plate Jackie Gonzalez, who reached on a walk. A two-out single to left field scored Brown and gave Georgia State a 2-0 lead.
Jade Sinness broke up Hallie Adams (4-6) no hitter with a leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth, but a double play ended the inning.
Two more runs in the top of the seventh proved to be too much to overcome with just three outs to work with.
Leanna Johnson (14-5) suffered the loss for the Trojans despite fanning 11 batters, good for her eighth double-digit strikeout game of the season.
Abrams earned her fourth win of the season, scattering a hit and a pair of walks.
