STATESBORO, Ga. – Clutch late-inning hits powered Troy to its third straight series win after picking up the victory over Georgia Southern, 3-1, in the Sunday series finale at Eagle Field.
The Trojans (20-9, 6-3 Sun Belt) have now won its first three series in league action in back-to-back seasons.
Leanna Johnson (13-4) jumped out the gate firing on all cylinders. The righty carried a no-hitter with five strikeouts into the fourth inning.
Georgia Southern (8-17, 3-6 Sun Belt) broke its hitless streak with a one-out home run by Janai Conklin in the bottom of the fourth frame. However, the Trojans quickly retaliated with a long ball off the bat of Jade Sinness to even the contest in the top of the fifth.
After Kelly Horne drew a walk, Anslee Finch continued her monster weekend ripping a double to left center that scored Emma Grace Walker, who pinch ran for Horne.
With a 2-1 lead in hand, Johnson returned to the circle and worked around a pair of two-out base runners to hang a zero.
In the top of the seventh, Horne added an insurance run for the Trojans with a solo blast over the center-field wall.
Taylor McKinney had the final say in the bottom of the seventh when the freshman turned a double play to get Troy out of a jam with a runner in scoring position.
Rylee Waldrep (4-4) suffered the loss after allowing a pair of runs off three hits and five walks.
Quotable – Co-Interim Head Coach Taylor Smartt
"I am really proud of the way we bounced back to earn the series win today. The top of our lineup came through in the late innings to give us a few runs. Leanna pitched a great game, and we played solid defense behind her to close the weekend out strong."
