Taylor Smartt begins her eighth overall season with the Trojans and seventh as a full-time assistant. Smartt served as a volunteer assistant coach during the Trojansโ 2015 season following a four-year playing career with the Trojans.
Smartt helped lead a record-breaking Trojan offense that powered the squad into its first NCAA Regional appareance in 25 years. Kelly Horne ranking ninth nationally with 18 doubles and Katie Webb just behind in 14th with 17 doubles.
Horne also set Troyโs single-season on-base percentage record (.495).ย
As Troyโs third base coach for the 2021 season, Jade Sinness came just two runs scored shy of breaking Troyโs single-season record.ย
ย Troy finished 2021 fourth nationally with 98 doubles for the year and eighth with 1.81 doubles per game.
Working primarily with the infield, Smarttโs defense recorded a .980 fielding percentage to rank sixth nationally in 2020.
At the plate, Troy had four hitters rank inside the top 15 in the Sun Beltโs batting average marks (Kelly Horne, Katie Webb, Katie Lively and Meagan Patterson). Lively also smashed eight doubles, good for second-most in the league.
Freshman Jade Sinness proved to be a force at the plate blasting the second-most home runs in the conference with six.
Smartt helped lead the Trojans to a historic 2019 season, where Smarttโs hitters finished with the third highest batting average in the Sun Belt Conference hitting a combined .263 clip. The squad combined for 386 hits including 69 doubles, 25 home runs and 219 RBIs. Two of Smarttโs dominant hitters were tabbed to the Sun Belt All-Conference team (Katie Webb and Bailey Taylor).
Smartt was also a big part of a team that set a program record with 51 home runs in 2015. The Trojans smashed 72 doubles after hitting only 34 the previous season.
In 2016, Smartt helped the team break the program home run record again with 62; the team also posted 71 doubles and nine triples on the season. In 2018, two of Smarttโs well-coached hitters lead the Sun Belt with 14 doubles (Katie Webb and Logan Calhoun).ย
Prior to her season with the Troy coaching staff, Smartt started 191 games over her four seasons at Troy and finished her career with 21 doubles, five triples, three home runs and 40 RBIs. ย
She was named to the NFCA All-Region Team following her freshman season when she hit .277 with eight doubles, a triple, a home run, 17 RBIs and 23 runs scored.
A native of Troy, Ala., Smartt graduated from Troy with a degree in sport and fitness management in 2014; Smartt also earned NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete honors during her career.
