TROY, Ala. – With her 26th career shutout, Leanna Johnson set Troy's program record after blanking Georgia State, 1-0, in the opening game of the series Friday at the Troy Softball Complex.
Leanna Johnson (14-4) notched her fifth shutout of the season to surpass Ashlyn Williams for the career shutout record.
The ace opened the contest with a pair of strikeouts to catch fire early.
The Trojans (21-9, 7-3 Sun Belt) then struck first in the bottom half of the frame to plate the only run needed to win the ballgame. A single off the bat of Kelly Horne and a pair of walks loaded the bases for Audra Thompson.
Thompson battled at the plate after falling behind in the count 0-2 to walk in the lone run of the contest.
Johnson worked around a walk over the next two innings to hold Georgia State (12-18, 3-4 Sun Belt) scoreless.
In the top of the fourth, the Panthers had their best opportunity to plate a run after back-to-back one-out singles. However, a strikeout and leaping catch over the dugout in foul territory by Thompson kept the Trojans unscathed.
Troy's stellar defense yet again made a game-changing play as Taylor McKinney robbed a home run in left field to hang another zero in top of the fifth.
After an error to lead off the sixth, Johnson retired the next six straight batters to pick up her 14th win of the season and notch the program record.
Hallie Adams (3-6) suffered the loss for Georgia State after giving up the walk to Thompson in the opening frame.
Quotable – Co-Interim Head Coach Holly Ward
"I am super proud of Leanna for setting the program's shutout record. She works hard during practice every day and is a fighter in the circle, so it is awesome to see her work produce these kinds of results on the field. The defense played a great game behind her. Audra and Taylor came up with great plays in the field to keep the shutout intact."
