Men’s Tennis Drops Thriller at No. 75 Georgia State

ATLANTA – Troy gave No. 75 Georgia State everything it could handle and more, but the Trojans came up just short as the Panthers escaped with a 4-3 victory Saturday at the GSU Clarkston Courts.

Troy (12-7), which saw its four-match win streak come to an end, had match point in doubles and on court three before Georgia State (9-6) was able to squeak out the victory in the Sun Belt opener for both clubs.

The Trojans and Panthers split the singles matches, with Troy winning on courts two, four and six with Carles Anton, Noah Martens and Vito Llinares continuing their strong springs. Anton moved to 15-4, while Llinares is 14-4 and Martens is 13-5 in dual matches this year.

After winning the doubles point, the Panthers jumped out to a 3-1 advantage with wins on courts one and five around Llinares' victory on court six. Anton's three-set victory on court two and Marten's three-setter on court four – in fact, four of the six singles matches went three sets.

On court three, Nicolas Simkin took the opening set 6-2 and had three match points in the second set before eventually falling in a tiebreak to Georgia State's Vazha Shaubladze, who then won the third set 6-2 to clinch the match for the Panthers.

Troy continues its road swing through Georgia with a visit to Georgia Southern Sunday morning.
