Men’s Tennis Closes Play at ITA Southern Regional

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Troy men's tennis team ended its run at the ITA Southern Regional on Monday afternoon, as Luciano Alcocer and Yeray Andres Pastor fell in the semifinals of the doubles main draw.
"Putting things in perspective after finishing the tournament, I see that we're making improvements," said head coach Rolando Vargas. "We're showing that we're capable of making things happen in the toughest situations. It's good to see that we have depth – I'm proud of the guys."
Facing Alabama's Jacob Olar and Andrii Zimnokh, Alcocer and Andres Pastor battled. They dropped the first set 6-2 and quickly fell behind two breaks in the second set.
However, the Trojans fought back to break Alabama's serve once and came within one point of doing it again, which would have tied the set up. Ultimately, Troy's strong run ended as the Crimson Tide won set two 6-4.
During the run, Alcocer and Andres Pastor took down opponents from UAB, Ole Miss and Louisiana, taking out Ole Miss' top-seeded duo in the process. Additionally, the Trojans were the only non-SEC team represented in the doubles semifinal.
Troy also placed six players in the singles main draw after a strong performance in the qualifying draw – four Trojans qualified to earn spots in the main draw. Alcocer and Thiago Drozdowski each won a match in the main draw and moved on to the round of 32.
