TROY, Ala. – Troy Baseball used home runs from Easton Kirk, Brandon Schrepf, and Trey Leonard to power its way past Louisiana 7-1 in the Sun Belt opener Friday night and won their sixth straight game from Riddle-Pace field.
"Tonight, we had a good approach," head coach Skylar Meade said. "We took our best swings in the zone, and our guys produced great at-bats. I was happy with how we saw the ball tonight, and the outcome reflects our hard work."
Troy (12-5) saw another quality start from sophomore Garrett Gainous (3-1) after going six innings, allowing one run on five hits and no walks while striking out six.
Ragin Cajun (9-8) starter Tommy Ray (1-2) lasted four innings, giving up five runs on five hits, walking one, and striking out three.
Seth Johnson got the bottom of the second inning started with an infield single, and Kirk followed with an eight-pitch at-bat before sending a ball 367 feet over the right-field monster for his third home run of the season and to give Troy a two-run advantage.
Louisiana responded in the top of the third and got one of those run back after a leadoff double and single cut the deficit in half.
After an error by Louisiana's second baseman, Johnson reached first base, which brought up Schrepf. Another lengthy at-bat saw the pitch blasted 364 feet for a two-run home run to give Troy a 5-1 lead and Schrepf's first home run in a Trojan uniform.
This was the second time the Trojans have hit two home runs in the same game, with the first coming in the opening series against Holy Cross.
The power surge continued into the night as Leonard became the latest Trojan to hit his first home run in the cardinal and white as his two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth blew open the game and gave Troy a 7-1 advantage.
The Trojans last hit three home runs in the same game back on April 25, 2021, against Appalachian State.
Gainous saw trouble in the top of the sixth, with the first two Cajun batters reaching. But with nobody out and behind in the count, Gainous produced a double play and a ground ball back-to-back in three pitches to hold Louisiana scoreless.
Kyle Gamble came on for his eighth appearance of the season in relief and finished the night strong picking up his second save of the season after going three innings and striking out five.
Up Next: The Trojans go for seven wins in a row tomorrow, March 19, as they continue the series with Louisiana at 3 p.m.
