TROY, Ala. – The Troy Trojans completed the opening weekend sweep of Holy Cross Sunday afternoon after a 8-1 win from Riddle-Pace Field.
This is the first opening weekend sweep since 2020, when the Trojans opened the season and swept Northern Kentucky.
"It was a great weekend," head coach Skylar Meade said. "Our offense turned the corner, and we played great defense throughout. We are establishing our identity, and this weekend, we saw the recipe for success, and we got to continue to do that."
Troy (4-0) outscored the Crusaders 44 to 8 across all four games. In his first appearance in the Trojan uniform, Logan Ross went five innings striking out eight, only allowing two hits and two walks to earn the win.
For Holy Cross (0-4), Jake McOsker picked up the loss after giving up six earned runs on 10 hits and two walks.
The Trojans wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as the Trojans plated two runs in the bottom of the first inning after a William Sullivan ground ball scored Rigsby Mosley and a Clay Stearns single brought in Caleb Bartolero.
Easton Kirk continued to swing a hot bat as he finished the day with two RBIs two hits, including his second straight day with a home run, when he went deep in the bottom of the third, sending a ball 393 ft over the scoreboard. Kirk would pick up his team-leading fifth RBI on the season with a single in the bottom of the fourth to extend the Trojans lead to 6-1.
Holy Cross was able to break up the shutout in the seventh inning after a double by designated hitter Jordan Petrushka brought in the lone Crusader run-off relief Pitcher Beau Fletcher.
After two quick outs in the bottom of the inning, Jesse Hall picked up his team-leading eighth hit of the season with a double off the monster, which was followed by a Trey Leonard single up the middle to score Hall and give Troy their six-run lead back.
Trojans weren't finished as Donovan Whibbs stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the eighth and crushed a ball 365 feet for his first career home run.
The Trojan bullpen was solid once again as Fletcher and Ryan Pettys made their first appearances of the season, each going 1.2 innings while Marquez Oates came in to secure the final two outs.
Up Next: Trojans will travel to Auburn to take on the Tigers on Wednesday, Feb. 23, for their first mid-week game of the season.
