AUBURN, Ala. – Troy dropped its road opener to Auburn Wednesday night at Plainsman Park 13-1. The Trojans struggled to string together any offense as they were held to 5 hits in the ballgame.
The Trojans (4-1) struck early as Tommy Sheehan walked the first two batters throwing nine straight balls. After a Bartolero ground ball advanced the runners, Cameron Gray drove in his fifth RBI of the season to give Troy the early 1-0 lead.
Auburn (3-1) was able to take the lead in the bottom half of the inning with a Bryson Ware grand slam after Trojan starting pitcher Beau Fletcher (0-1) had him in a 0-2 hole before Ware sent the ball over the left field wall to give the Tigers a 4-1 lead.
In his one inning of work, Fletcher allowed four hits, a walk, and four runs, all of which were unearned as Bartolero was given an error after his throw pulled the first baseman Gray off the bag to keep the inning alive.
Troy would turn to the bullpen the rest of the way as seven Trojan pitchers saw game action. Ryan Pettys, Grayson Stewart, Noah Janney, Kyle Gamble, Keaton Fuller, and Judson Hershiser saw game action. Trojan pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts which were highlighted by Stewart and Fuller, both striking out the side.
Tiger's first baseman Sonny DiChiara tacked on three more runs with a home run in the bottom of the second off Pettys and then plated another run with a sacrifice fly off Janney in the fourth. DiChaiara finished with four RBIs and scored three runs.
Throughout the game, the Trojans would have their opportunity to chip at the lead but were 0-9 with runners in scoring position.
Another crooked inning saw Auburn score three runs after a Cole Foster doubled to clear the bases and give the Tigers a 13-1 lead.
Hayden Mullins (1-1) gets credited with the win for Auburn, going two innings and giving up one hit, and striking out two.
Up Next: Troy will continue the road trip as they head to Jacksonville, Fla. For a three-game weekend series Feb. 25-27.
