TROY, Ala. – The Troy men's tennis team is set for a busy weekend with the squad splitting between two locations for the Mercer Invitational and the ITA All-American Championship.
Head coach Rolando Vargas will send the core returners from last year's squad that reached the Sun Belt Conference semifinals to compete against some of the best in the country at the ITA All-American Championship in Tulsa, Okla.
"We have two big tournaments this weekend," head coach Rolando Vargas said. "The ITA All-American is a very prestigious event with some of the top teams from all over the country. We had a very good showing there two years ago, and we're taking guys with experience and who know how to win.
"The tournament at Mercer will feature some of the top teams from our region and will give us a good idea of where we stand. Our team has a lot of depth and that tournament will give us a good idea of who is ready to play once the spring schedule rolls around."
2021 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year Carles Anton will make his season debut at the event as he enters the season 35-6 in singles the last two seasons, including a 30-4 mark in dual matches and 31-5 in doubles.
Vargas will also call upon Pelayo Antuna, who opened the season last week at the Panther Invitational following an All-Sun Belt season last year, plus Christopher Tasker and Nicolas Simkin. Tasker and Simkin teamed up for All-Sun Belt doubles honors last year as the pair combined to go 13-4 on the year, 8-3 on court one and 5-1 on court two. Tasker posted a 17-8 mark in singles last year, while Simkin was 15-5.
The remainder of Troy's roster will head to Macon, Ga., for the Mercer Invitational. Nicolas Rodriguez and Maxime Hillhouse will see their second action of the season, while Manuel Bernard, Francisco Erramuspe, Vito Llinares and Noah Martens will make their season debuts.
Bernard had a strong spring season for the Trojans, playing primarily on court two, where he posted a 6-2 record, while Llinares dominated his spring matches with a 16-6 mark mostly on court four.
