Men’s Tennis Opens Fall Season at Georgia State Invitational

TROY, Ala. – Fourth-year head coach Rolando Vargas leads the Troy men's tennis team into action for the first time this fall when the Trojans open play at the Georgia State Invitational this weekend.
The Trojans are coming off a semifinals appearance in the Sun Belt Conference Championship last year and a final No. 8 ranking in the ITA Southern Region. In addition, Troy returns three of their top four players from that squad. Making the trip to Atlanta for the fall opener will be senior Pelayo Antuna, junior Manuel Bernard, freshman Maxime Hillhouse and sophomore Nicolas Rodriguez.
"I'm excited to take these four players and get this season started," Vargas said. "This is a great event for us to start with. Georgia State's tournaments always have tough competition, and the draws are set up where you can play anyone no matter the position in the lineup. This setup will help our players prepare for the spring where they could occupy many different spots in the lineup."
Antuna earned his second-career First Team All-Sun Belt Singles honor last year as he posted a 9-6 mark in singles and a 9-4 doubles record after battling back from an early-season injury. A mainstay on the top court for Troy throughout his career, Antuna has earned 15 wins on court one over the past two seasons.
Bernard posted a 7-4 dual record last season for the Trojans, primarily from the No. 2 spot in the lineup where he was 6-2 in singles. Rodriguez saw most of his action during the fall a year ago, where he posted a 3-3 record, while Hillhouse joins the Trojans from Toulouse, France.
