ATLANTA – A complete performance by both Troy's offense and defense led the Trojans to a double-digit, run-rule shutout over Georgia State, 12-0, in the opening game of the series Friday at Bob Heck Field.
The Trojans (20-6, 4-0 Sun Belt) struck first in the opening frame with a pair of two-run long balls by Katie Lively and Libby Baker.
After Leanna Johnson (11-3) retired three of the first four Panthers she faced, Troy tacked on another run in the top of the second off a Kelly Horne sacrifice fly to score Lively, who led off with a walk.
Georgia State (12-9, 0-1 Sun Belt) stranded a base runner in the bottom of the second to send the game into the third, where the Trojans ignited for five runs.
Anslee Finch kick started the action doubling to right center. Candela Figueroa followed with a single to left scoring Finch.
Logan Calhoun then joined the doubles party, smashing a two-bagger to right center plating the third run of the inning.
Katie Webb capped off the five-run affair with her second homer of the season, a three-run shot over the center field wall.
After a scoreless fourth frame, the Trojans monstered back-to-back jacks by Lively and Horne in the top of the fifth to tack on the final two runs of the contest.
The Panthers attempted to spark a two-out to keep the game from ending in five innings but stranded two runners.
Johnson earned the victory tossing a two-hitter with five strikeouts while Sophie Mooney (4-4) suffered the loss for Georgia State allowing four runs, three hits and a walk.
QUOTABLE – Head Coach Beth Mullins
"I thought we played a complete game today! Our offense came out and put runs on the board early. After the first inning, they continued to put runs on the board often, too. Leanna and our defense then shut the door behind them! I am excited to get back out there tomorrow with Team 28 and compete one pitch at a time again."
