JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Nicole Lorup turned in three rounds under par to lead Troy to a second-place finish at the First Coast Classic at the Deerwood Country Club with play concluding Tuesday. Lorup shot 5-under for the tournament and finished second individually. Troy's team score ranks as the third lowest in school history while Lorup's mark is the sixth best in Troy history.
Troy led the field with 43 birdies as a unit while Lorup's 11 birdies were tied for the fourth most and Anna Claire Little's 10 birdies tied for the seventh most. Lorup was under par on both the par 4 (-4) and par 5 (-2) holes across the two-day, three-round event.
Lorup now holds Troy's No. 1, No. 5 and No. 7 54-hole scores in school history, while four of the top 10 54-hole team scores have come in Randy Keck's tenure as head coach.
"We had a lot of good stuff happen this week," Keck said. "Coming out of winter break and trying to play our way into shape, we haven't been blessed with the best weather to practice or play in, but we had a great week overall. We had so many bright spots up and down the lineup and we played great team golf."
Lorup finished just a shot off the individual title after FIU's Carolina Andrade birdied her final hole of the tournament following a bogey the previous hole tied her with Lorup at the top of the leaderboard. The second-place finish was Lorup's fourth in the top 10 in six events this season.
Little continued her strong start to the spring with a 1-over 217 to finish in a tie for ninth place after tying for third in the spring opener last week. Little carded a 3-over on Tuesday with a pair of birdies. ShaeLee Scarberry made a big jump up the leaderboard with a 32-spot move from the end of play Monday following an even-par 72 in the final round; she finished in a tie for 21st place.
"AC was solid all week and has really played strong this spring," Keck said. "Elisabeth (Preus) was solid all week and Nicole has a chance to win every time she steps on the golf course. Elizabeth Caldarelli had great timing with her second-round performance and ShaeLee came through when we really needed her today. Just a heck of a group effort."
Elisabeth Preus picked up her third top 25 performance of the season as she tied for 24th place at 10-over after shooting 78 in Tuesday's final round, while Elizabeth Caldarelli tied for 45th at 16-over par.
Troy will have a few weeks off before returning to Jacksonville for the UNF Collegiate at the Jacksonville Country Club on March 7-9.
"We're excited for a couple of weeks at home to work and get better and hopefully get some short-sleeve days," Keck said. "Spring golf is a marathon and not a sprint, we've got the right things going on right now."
