TROY, Ala. – Pelayo Antuna picked up a victory at the ITA All-American Championship and Nicolas Rodriguez advanced to his flight championship match at the Mercer Gridiron Classic as the Troy men's tennis team was split over two locations Saturday.
Antuna opened play at the ITA All-American Championship with a thrilling victory over Sun Belt rival Anton Shepp from UT Arlington. After dropping the opening set in a tiebreak, 6-7 (4), Antuna forced a super-tiebreaker by blanking Shepp, 6-0, in the second set. Antuna outlasted Shepp, 11-9, in the third set to advance. He dropped his afternoon match, also in three sets, to UAB's Michael Lusovsky (6-7 (4), 6-4, 10-6)
Carles Anton is still alive for the Trojans in the ITA All-American Championship as he earned a bye into the qualifier round due to his regional ranking.
At Mercer, Rodriguez picked up a straight-set victory over Matis Amier (6-0, 6-2) to set up a championship matchup with Charlotte's Cole Brainard on Sunday. Vito Llinares, Noah Martens and Maxime Hillhouse all picked up singles wins on Saturday, while a trio of Troy's doubles teams also were winners at Mercer on Saturday.
