BOONE, N.C. – At 3,333 feet above sea level, Troy continued to make Boone, N.C. its home away from home. The Trojans won their sixth straight game in as many tries at Appalachian State after defeating the Mountaineers, 80-60 Friday night in the Holmes Convocation Center.
On top of winning its sixth straight at App State, Troy (10-4, 6-1 SBC) also extended its season long winning streak to six on Friday. After being outscored 14-20 in the first quarter, the Trojans outscored App State (8-7, 5-4 SBC) in the final three frames 66-40. Troy shot 41 percent (30-for-73) from the field and 31 percent (5-for-16) from behind-the-arc. On the defensive end, the Trojans held the Mountaineers to just 33 percent shooting while holding the Sun Belt Conference's leading scorer, Pre Stanley (17.4 ppg), to just five total points on 2-of-8 shooting.
"The score really wasn't vindictive of how close of a game it was," head coach Chanda Rigby said. "We were down almost the whole first half and finally got up by six points and it was really hard to increase the lead after that. But once we did get going, we started to get to the free throw line and we kept attacking. [App State] had to step off of us a little after that because they knew we were going to the free throw line every time."
How It Happened
After jumping out to an early 10-5 lead, things began to swing in App State's favor. The Mountaineers got a few calls to go in their favor and used that momentum to close the quarter on a 15-4 run.
Entering the second quarter it looked as though App State had retained some momentum as the two teams were traded buckets for the first four minutes of the frame. Momentum began to swing into Troy's favor after Felmas Koranga made her first triple of her Troy career. Following the Koranga three, the Trojans went on a 13-0 run to flip its six-point deficit into a six-point lead before going into the locker room with a 40-37 advantage.
Out of the break App State cut the Trojan lead to one before Troy began to take over. A Sandifer triple started a rally of five straight from Tyasia Moore followed by two from more and Sandifer and two from Tiyah Johnson that pushed the Troy lead to 10.
Troy continued to extend its lead in the final minutes of the third and into the fourth period before putting the game away. The Trojans took their largest lead of the game, 23-points, on a Jasmine Robinson 15-foot jumper before closing out the game with an 80-60 victory.
Who Stood Out
Tiyah Johnson had a great game for the Trojans, earning her first career double-double. The senior from Phenix City, Ala. scored a game-high 17-points on 8-of-19 shooting with 10 boards, 10 boards, three assists, three steals and a blocked shot. Four of her 10 rebounds came on the offensive end.
Quoting Coach Rigby
On the strong defensive effort
"I think we had the determination from the beginning. The altitude did get to us a little bit and we started to get them out sooner and out bench really helped us give them a break. Once we were able to catch our breath and get used to it we were able to put forth more effort on the defensive end."
On battling the altitude
"We just want to make sure they get enough fluids and that they get a lot of sleep. It's a business trip and we are halfway through with it. We have one more game to go and we will have them foam roll and stretch."
