Troy’s Alexis Garrett Represented Sun Belt Conference at NCAA Convention

TROY, Ala. – Troy senior and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) President Alexis Garrett represented NCAA Division I student-athletes on behalf of the Sun Belt Conference at last week's NCAA Convention. Garrett had a seat at the table for voting on rule changes and also took part in leadership seminars throughout the week.
"Attending this year's NCAA Convention was a great opportunity for me and my leadership development," Garrett said. "I am also grateful for the opportunity I have to serve on the NCAA DI SAAC with a group of student-athletes who care about the NCAA 100 percent and the student-athlete experience. I was able to participate in conversations on legislative proposals and give input on many discussions in the association."
The NCAA Division I Board of Directors voted in August of 2014 to restructure how schools and conferences govern themselves, paving the way for student-athletes to have a voice – and a vote – at every level of decision-making. A council, established as part of that process, is responsible for day-to-day operations of the division and includes two seats for student-athletes, two for faculty and four for commissioners.
Within this structure, the national SAAC representatives generate a student-athlete voice within the NCAA structure, solicit student-athlete response to proposed NCAA legislation, recommend potential NCAA legislation, review, react and comment to the governance structure on legislation, activities and subjects of interest and actively participate in the administrative process of athletics programs and the NCAA.
Garrett, a member of the Troy track & field team, began a three-year appointment to the NCAA Division I SAAC this academic year. Garrett has spearheaded conference-wide mental health awareness initiatives and planned and coordinated several local community enrichment projects including Troy's annual Bench Out Breast Cancer event.
Selected a team captain, the Union, S.C., native has medaled at both the Sun Belt Indoor and Outdoor Championships during her career and was named to the All-Sun Belt team following the 2018 outdoor season.
