AUBURN, Ala. --Â The Troy Trojans battled Sunday night, before ultimately falling 3-0 at Auburn. The loss snapped a five-match unbeaten streak for the Trojans.
In defeat senior Haleigh Mercer record eight saves.
Â
The Trojans (3-1-2) best opportunity to score in the first-half came in the 14th minute when a Kiersten Edlund corner kick found the right foot of Grace Mirly, whose attempt toward goal was blocked.
Following the halftime break, the Trojans and Tigers (3-2) continued to search for a goal, but neither team was able to find the back of the net. Â
Overall, Troy recorded four shots for the match, landing a pair on goal.
Â
Troy returns to action Friday afternoon at Southern University. Kickoff from Baton Rouge is set for 5 p.m.
Â
GED TALKS:
"I thought there were a number of excellent individual performances tonight, but I need to be saying that about the entire team, not just a select group. I thought we showed an immense amount of growth in the second half. We worked harder, and we looked like we were enjoying the experience. In the second half, we did a much better job of thinking about the next ball, the next tackle and so on. I think we're consistently working on our defensive shape, and we need to do a better job of forcing teams out wide on the pitch."
On what the team learned from tonight:
"If the players can go home and see that they had more to give at halftime, and they responded, I think that's a massive lesson. The way we worked against UAB was much better than we gave tonight. If we can consistently reach that level against different opponents then I think we'll be tough. But regardless, we should be giving our best effort. The way we performed in the second half is what we need to build on this week."
NOTEWORTHY:
• Troy has allowed just one second half goal all season, outscoring opponents 7-1 over that span.
• Sunday was Troy's first true road match of the season.
• The Trojans fall to 0-4 all-time at Auburn.
• Auburn's three-goal output was the most by an opponent since Little Rock scored five goals last Oct. 19.
• Sunday's defeat was just the second time that the Trojans failed to record a goal.
• Mercer recorded her third match with at least five saves.
• Edlund saw a three-match point streak snapped.
