BOONE, N.C. – Troy soccer's season came to an end Sunday afternoon, as the Trojans fell to App State 3-0 on the road.
The Trojans (4-10-4, 3-4-2 SBC) needed a result to keep their Sun Belt Championship hopes alive but struggled to generate offense, failing to register a shot throughout the match. Taylor Richards recorded a season-high 10 saves in the defeat.
App State (11-3-4, 6-2-2 SBC) was led by Ellie Garrison's brace, as the Mountaineers outshot Troy 22-0, putting 14 attempts on target.
The Mountaineers opened the scoring in the 18th minute. Reagan Sturgill fired a shot that struck the left post and caromed back into the box, where Sofia Goclowski tapped in the rebound.
Just three minutes later, Garrison doubled App State's advantage with a goal from the right side of the box, marking her 11th of the season.
The Mountaineers nearly added a third later in the half after earning a penalty kick following a foul in the box. Richards came to the rescue, diving to her left to keep Garrison's attempt out of the net. The stop marked her second penalty save of the season, with the first coming at Georgia Southern on Oct. 22.
App State carried a 2-0 advantage into halftime.
The Mountaineers continued their offensive attack in the second half, with Garrison scoring her second goal in the 67th minute on a strike from outside the box that left Richards with no chance to make the save.
Troy was unable to find an answer, as App State held on for the 3-0 victory, bringing the Trojans' season to a close.
Quotable - Head coach Jake Wyman
"We were miles off today. Didn't really give ourselves a chance. Credit to App State. They dominated in all phases. The girls have given everything for the program and I am grateful for the opportunity to lead this group. I am proud of the progress we've made, especially within the Sun Belt. Our staff and the players deserve a lot of credit for their efforts this season. Rebuilding doesn't always happen overnight and we will look to build on the foundation we've laid this year."
