MOBILE, Ala. – The Troy Trojans soccer program remained unbeaten on the 2019 season Friday afternoon, defeating Stetson University 3-2 at the Jaguar Classic hosted by South Alabama.
The difference in the match, was set piece goal from senior captain Kiersten Edlund, whose perfect corner-kick service just eluded Stetson (1-2) goalkeeper Lara Bates before finding the net.
Junior Haleigh Mercer made a pair of saves to earn her second victory of the season.
Troy started quickly Friday, scoring just over five minutes into the match. Freshman Melissa Kuya-Strobel received a perfect through ball from Kate Eubanks and deposited the ball into the back of the net.
The lead did not last long, as pair of Stetson goals just four minutes apart put Troy behind for the first time this season.
Looking for an equalizer right before the half, freshman Caroline Tully found a wide-open Kendra Cashion who promptly fired a shot into the back-of-the-net, tying the score at two.
Much like the first half of action, Troy seized momentum early in the final half, scoring the winning goal just six minutes after the break. Following the goal, Troy was able to hold-off a late Stetson charge to hold on for a 3-2 victory.
With the victory, Troy remains unbeaten through three matches from the first time since 2009 when the team started the campaign 3-0. The Trojans will look to extend the unbeaten streak Sunday evening, for the final match of the Jaguar Classic against UAB. Kickoff from Mobile is scheduled for 6 p.m.
GED TALKS:
"Tonight, was an excellent team performance," head coach Ged O'Connor said. "We're starting to see the foundation being built. We want to be a team whose hallmark is reliance. Tonight, I thought we played a gritty match against a really good team in hot conditions. Obviously, we were thrilled to score so quickly in the match. We would have liked to keep the lead longer than we did, but I like how we responded to losing the lead. We really had to fight and claw for the victory. I think we're starting to play the way that we want. So overall, I'm really proud of how our girls battled under the conditions."
NOTEWORTHY:
• The Trojans three-match unbeaten streak is the programs longest since 2016.
• Troy has outscored its opponents 10-2 this season.
• Mercer allowed her first two goals of the season. Her scoreless streak was snapped at 206 minutes.

• Edlund's game-winner was her second career game-winning goal.
